I agree with every word of your post but you haven't mentioned that below the the av price cap chart Ofgem state they always monitor what companys are charging to ensure the price is within the capped fugure, seems they give Shell Energy a wide berth when making any checks.

Thread: Telescopic Gauges - Technique?
30/08/2022 11:38:07

Ref #3 from OP For shallow bores and grooves, like Bill I use Dial calipers and a mic to check over the ends when the dial reads as the bore/groove indicated.
Sometimes it's better to set the mic to the dimension required and check the reading on the caliper dial so you have a target to get to.

As Bill said these do come up for sale fairly often and are well worth the investment as they are also useful to check any bore is parallel.

For smaller than 12mm diameter holes/bores I find ball type gauges and a mic give accurate readings but only with practise as is the case with telescopic gauges.

Several other useful methods for measuring bores can be seen in my Photo Album. (Internal Measuring Devices)

Thread: Strange fault ML7
22/08/2022 20:53:26

Hi Haydn

Probably best for you to seek the help of a friend with electrical knowledge to have a look for you, they may even have an insulation tester to trace the fault, unless of course it turns out to be intermittent in which case it will be more difficult to find.

From what youv'e said the fault seems to be on the motor feed live supply, check that at all positions for leakage to earth problems.

As said by Swarf make sure the power lead is disconnected from the socket before venturing into the electrical boxes.

Having just read your latest post you could contact the supplier of the lathe, he may offer some help/advice.

A good starting point for help would be a view of the schematic provided by 4QD and a picture of the parts in the kit.

Thread: Donations to keep forum free

I am late into reading this thread but do not object to making a donation to keep the site running. I use a motorcycle forum and have just added another 30 days for $9.99 (£8.34) a cheap way to entertain myself. It was not until I read this thread and looked at the donate bit that I saw it, it is not an in your face pay now banner.

Sounds like a good earner for someone, has to be a lot of good posts to demand that level of fee.

Good saving on Alibre Atom and other programs on offer at present, those who have trialled Atom can now buy the package with a years maintenance for around £160

saving 40% of listed price.

I have not used Hermes since they changed their name to ENRI but it would appear that they no longer accept Paypal as a means of payment. If this is the case and I would prefer to use a courier who does offer this method payment can anyone recommend some possible alternative services.

Check on this site, plenty of choice but I haven't checked for paypal acceptance.

Thread: Cutting a slot in a screwhead
29/07/2022 20:51:39

On the last gudgeon pin remover tool I made, using an arbor mounted 2.75mm diam saw in a vertical spindle, I bought the slowly rotating 0.50mm thick blade down to touch off the top of the 4mm diameter part held in a horizontally fitted indexing/dividing head, set the Z axis to zero, moved off in the X direction until clear then dropped the blade to below the part, raised the blade to touch off the part and read the Z readout, moved off the part again in the X axis and raised the head 1/2 the recorded distance. Set the spindle revs to 300 and using the X axis moved the blade into the work by the 10mm required with a feedrate of 30mm/min.

Using this method evens out any runout on the blade and gives a spot on centre cut.

Ian P beat me to it.

Thread: Will the lights stay on this winter?
29/07/2022 10:13:14
Posted by Mark Rand on 29/07/2022 09:56:30:

Centrica made less than 10% profit. That's not exactly fleecing.

Maybe if we had invested in storage capacity, we would be less vulnerable to fluctuations in world markets, but then we'd have the cost of that infrastructure.

As to the brief price spike on importing for a few hours from Belgium, that's how the market works. We import and export electricity according to need and pricing, but you can't legislate against turbines tripping etc.

Of course it's fleecing customers, especially so in the case of business users who don't have any cap to prices charged. Centrica most likely work on a 2% profit most of the time and rely on huge turnover to make profit.
Shell claim to be supplying renewable source electricity so why have their prices increased by such a large amount ? some increase is inevitable to cover additional maintenance costs but the wind is free so no additional cost there, the billions of profit they have just announced are nothing but profiteering at the expense of their customers.

I totally agree with DaveW comments above.

Thread: Options for Variable speed drive on Atlas 12" lathe ?
24/07/2022 15:00:37

Rich

Have a look on Lathes UK site, it looks like you have a choice of 16 spindle speeds covering an excellent range.

To get variable speed means a new 3 phase motor and a VFD to control it.

I think you may have to with imperial sizes or at least they are listed for sale as thread TPI.

I use metric full form inserts which also are pitch related although a 60 deg insert will cut all threads but not provide the finished crest shape.

Thread: collet chuck vs collet arbor used on lathe headstock spindle
14/07/2022 09:23:46

Sounds OK for short work pieces, but check the MT3 socket will take a full length MT3 taper because many of the 5 series spindles need a reduction for a small length of the taper diameter at the small end.

Thread: Centrifugal switch bakelite broken problem.

If the part that broke off is not a working part of the switch you could remove the same amount of material from the opposite side to keep the mass balanced.

To answer your question trepan a ring from paxolin/tufnol including a recess with smaller diameter than the switch so it will support the existing plate when araldited back in.
