Thread: New Look |
11/11/2013 23:12:42 |
Hi So far the new look seems to work fine for me the more you use it the easier it gets, as with most things. In the same context I have recently purchased a Samsung tablet from PC world (usual disclaimer) & tried to log into MEW on it, once I got the hang of the basic, but I couldn't log in as the black title bar had dropped down to cover the log in box. It's fine on my desktop & laptop just not on the tablet device, could it be that that particular 'Field box' has detached itself from the main format (IT whizz's can guess what I mean) in android OS or is it not formatted for Android apps? I used my normal search engine for access via t'internet so I would have thought it would come up as normal web page, any help would be appreciated, Regards George Edited By mechman48 on 11/11/2013 23:15:12 |

Hi Stub Mandrel Range is 0 -18 mm (since I modified it) Handy for those little short hole jobs, there are a lot of members have used 6" digi verniers with appropriate fixings for longer sizes but I based it on that if I needed to find that extra 1/2 - 1mm at the bottom of the hole I would place my drill to the bottom then use this to get that bit extra.. horses for courses I s'pose. The gauge was bought from flea bay as tyre gauges, cost me about £6 -7 IIRC . George |

Hi Rik Surprised that Warco have sent you someone's reject / used post, it makes that second hand, have you paid full price for it? I would give them a call & arrange some sort of refund / credit note. Considering they had machined the replacement then I would look at drilling a anti rotation pin hole through the post / block & into the cast compound slide & make a pin to suit. My QCTP is one I kept from my 3-1 machine & it is a Bison copy of the Myford which already has a hole machined in before it was heat treated. I have drilled 2 locating holes through this into the casting, one position to use as normal & another to allow me to use the backside of the post if I need that extra outside diameter machinability if you get my drift.
The other location hole is under the top right corner allowing me to turn the post 90* anticlockwise & bring the left side tool holder location to the rear (bottom of pic) to give me approx' an extra 1" or so OD machining capability. Cheers George Edited By mechman48 on 03/11/2013 11:11:24 |

I like it, thanks for the update, much prefer to see nice large digi' numbers though what with my eyes and all, nice mod never the less, will keep in the memory bank... memory bank ! ... where's that, & what interest rate are they paying?... ho hum, retiree's humour George |

The protractor scale on my 1 year old Warco WM 250 is also off by 1/2 a degree, I set the top slide true with a parallel bar (silver steel) & DTI & fastened everything down & left it set at that, so now unless I absolutely need to have a taper (for what I do at the mo' is very rare) it doesn't get moved. Decided to make a tailstock fitting to attach a digital tyre depth gauge to my tailstock, to get a better reading for depth drilling, a lot of members will have something similar no doubt. Used some ally from my scrapbinium box, some neodiminiminum...? .... 'earth' magnets & some epoxy resin. It gave me a chance to use my rotab' for the first time since I got it a year ago so it was a learning curve as well as making something from my 'toduit' list. The only addition to the digi gauge was to fabricate a small steel plate on the back of the gauge at the front end which had 4 small magnets epoxy glued on & 6 smaller stacked magnets at the rear end (2 stacks 3mm x 1mm) this was then just placed onto the tailstock. I glued a 6 x 1 magnet onto the back of the clamp which when attracted to a small magnet I'd fitted to the stem of the gauge sometime earlier gave an extra strong magnetic pull.
One less item on the list...now what's next? Cheers George

Hi Mike Welcome; try these links for info' http://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=86782 There are other machines on the market from Arc Euro, Chester, Axminster, Myford, Harrison, Colchester etc., depends on what your budget is & what you plan on making, also bear in mind your start up tooling costs which can lead to as much if not more than the cost of the machine...eventually, I think a few of us here can bear that out. I have the Warco WM 250V-F which I find quite satisfactory. If I can help in any way drop me a pm. Regards George

'...too much far eastern junk on sale.' ... only to be expected, where do you think all of the stuff comes from! The major suppliers Arc Euro / Chronos / Axminster / Warco / Chester etc.., all get their stuff from, China / India, with some items coming from Poland, Czech republic (Tos etc.). if you were looking for a UK manufacturer, best of luck, even RDG /Greenwoods / Glanze get a lot of their stuff from the same Asian / eastern sources, even Screwfix / Toolstation / B&Q have a lot of stuff marked 'Made in China / India / Eastern Europe'...UK manufacturer...dream on! The only truly British owner/manufacturer, that I can recall, that is still in British hands is Morgan, (Land Rover is owned by Tata India IIRC, etc.) so if you're in the market for a Morgan + 2, & have £40K + to spare...? So unless there is an Entrepreneur out there with a few tens of millions to invest in engineering tooling, with a particular bent to model engineering, we're stuck with Asian / Chinese / East European imports (junk?). the only recourse I can see for UK stuff is car boot sales or auctions (ex school/college/training equip't). During this past year as I have set my 'workshop' (man cave) up I have a fair amount of tooling purchases, cutters, digital DTI, mic's etc. from the far east & I would honestly say the better quality stuff I have got thru' CTC (Hong Kong)... 'usual disclaimer'... they seem to have better quality control in place. I also have older stuff 'Starret / Moore & Wright (UK) / Snap on (US) etc.. but these were 'obtained ' over the last 50 yrs or so, so considering the economic climate & the far eastern burgeoning economy then I expect a lot more 'junk' to be available, we'll have to live with it. Apologies for the diatribe & no offence intended, but I try to live & work with what's available at the moment, be it good or bad. George |
Thread: Chuck nuts...... |
19/10/2013 11:00:51 |
Had a look at Ady1 link for swivel flange nuts, could be the answer, but they are the wrong thread...1/4 x 20 & no metric sizes. I have replaced mine with 8 mm SS flange nuts & don't have to worry about dropping the washer into the swarf, not bothered how fast I can change the chuck as long as it's on correctly & secure. Don't know why the Chinese have to make the gap so close to the headstock, an extra 6 mm in the gap would do wonders for our fat fingers (well mine anyway) but at the mo' flange nuts are the way to go. Not exactly 'did today' more like what I did last week.. went hunting around the scrapyard to look for material stock up, picked up 18.5 kilos brass, 2.5 kilos aluminium * 6 kilos of cast iron (sash weights) so am reasonably stocked up for a while. tried cutting the sash weights, bandsaw blade hardly touched it ... obviously chilled iron... will have to get the barby out & cook them for a while then cool off naturally. Brass is going up in price, (round piece is 75mm dia, flats are 600x75x6)....this lot cost me £80. George Edited By mechman48 on 17/10/2013 12:47:47 Edited By mechman48 on 17/10/2013 12:56:21 |

Update: Just called in to my opticians today 'should have gone to ...', HSE & Insurance Co's will not allow reglazing of safety specs, ordered new pair, picked out personal choice frame (light metal) with ultra large Bifocal section for close work (non standard so extra cost), scratch resistant coating, polycarbonate side shields...£119. I use them, Bi-focal, but they were supplied by a previous employer so can't say what I would have paid for them, but I could hazard a guestimate of around £80 (employers get a substantial discount) from the last price I recall. I am going to get mine reglazed during the next couple of weeks as they need updating now so could let you know later. Pop into your local opticians & ask, they all do them on request. 6" rule, 4" digital calliper, & a 0 -15mm outside mic' that I bought from a special deal ad in the MEW (can't remember where from)... ideal for those small items, don't have to fumble trying to get calliper / digi mic in close to chuck. George |

Rik Have one of these myself but of the clamp type & have it fitted on the shelf behind my WM16 mill, super lighting. The top slide friction ring certainly improves access & grip don't it; I notice also you have made a bed saddle stop as per my design (modified?), certainly works nice doesn't it, I have since modified mine to under clamping, from your pic it seems as you have done the same. Nice to have ideas & tips passed on, utilised & appreciated. I notice you have a coolant supply fitted, how are you powering the flow, gravity, aquarium pump, car window washer pump ...? appreciate description. Cheers George |
