Just Starting

Hi Folks,

I'm just starting out again after a long pause! I'm looking for a lathe to go in my shed and perhaps you folks may have some suggestions? I've used lathes at uni and at work but only have single phase electrics at home.

All info greatly appreciated. I'm in Norfolk by the way,

There are other machines on the market from Arc Euro, Chester, Axminster, Myford, Harrison, Colchester etc., depends on what your budget is & what you plan on making, also bear in mind your start up tooling costs which can lead to as much if not more than the cost of the machine...eventually, I think a few of us here can bear that out. I have the Warco WM 250V-F which I find quite satisfactory. If I can help in any way drop me a pm.

I was I was just starting, I seem to have just stopped! I think the decision tree is "New Chinese" or "Old British". If you go New Chinese, then a lot of the machines appear the same, so it's really about choosing a supplier with good access to spares and a good customer service rating. If you go "Old British" then it's about deciding if you have enough experience to pick a good one yourself or if you will need help.

Three Phase Inverters [single phase input, three phase output] are readily available now, at very reasonable prices.

[Assuming typical Hobbyist motor powers.]

I'm just outside Gt. Yarmouth, up the coast. I've used lathes as a technology teacher, so not "for profit"! I'm also into watchmaking and due to the current high gold prices, there are lots of good movements looking for cases (due to scrappage). I was wondering if I could make some cases in modern materials for old watch movements.

Wow! Mike's site is amazing. I stayed in Bridgenorth a few weeks ago for a short holiday. His work is superb.

Thanks for all the information posted so far. It is much appreciated. I think that some of my watch collection will have to go to fund the purchase of equipment!
