Considering its a new machine I would check your warranty, as some companies state that any attempt to 'fiddle' with equipment will void any warranty coverage. It should have been 'fit for purpose' straight out of the box.. set it up plug it in & away you go .. shouldn't have to mess on with major wiring probs.. any probs should be resolved by Chester's in the first place, either offer you an exchange or send a electrician to home fix it.. depending on warranty terms.. considering you have already set it up I doubt if the 'exchange' scenario will take place so the other option should be available... anyhow these machines should be checked prior to delivery.. as they claim George. Ho Hum... the vessels I did my MN bit on could only manage ..on a good day.. 13 - 15 knots max.. more than often running at 12 knots @ 100rpm, fuel conservation & all that according to the chief, & that was with B&W diesels, up & down the West African coast / Europe / UK.... yeah I know 'Tramping' .... I recall during my apprentice days we used to use stuff we called 'black fat' or 'clagum', came in a 25 litre drum, looked like thick black treacle, but was much denser than treacle (the black fat not the apprentice George |

Murray I reckon we're on the same page but as a closing comment .... Jaguar were owned by Ford USA, Jaguar & Land Rover are now both owned by TATA ( India, since 2008 ) so you can guess where all the profits are going, certainly not into the Treasury's coffers, albeit they are both doing well they are 'assembled' in the UK, they are not technically UK companies under British ownership, same goes for SCC steel at Redcar ( Indonesia ) TATA own Lackenby steel plant... China has a huge stake in Northumbrian Water.. etc. etc. Napoleon was correct in his comment during the peninsular wars that England was nothing but a nation of dog lovers & shopkeepers... & so it comes to pass... all thanks to politicians & the need for a quick buck. ... Muzzer; I would disagree with your comment 'What our generation and the one before it has done to the current generation of students and young graduates is simply disgusting' ... It's not what we (I'm 66) did in the eighties it was what the government then & now have/are doing, we 'Engineers' could see what would transpire when the larger companies decided to cut back on 'Apprenticeships' & went over to 'YOPS'... YTS schemes, Look at what our present government are doing... Austerity, cut to the bone, where we once had a large fleet we now have 19 ships in total, India now has more ships than the UK... The government then to some degree, & now, are career politicians, have never done a days 'work' in their lives & come from the 'old school privileged Eton / Harrow public school background, they make promises, as they all do... leave education & NHS as priority ring fenced systems... then what, the LIb/Dems do a U turn & slap a fee on education.. in the UK.. Scotland still get free education .. free prescriptions etc.... subsidised by the 'British Taxpayer' that's how.. it's not we 'Older generation 'engineers' that have created the present day mire... it was / is the selected privileged few landed gentry, business bosses, Bankers et al ... ... Oooops.. Please excuse the soapbox stand.. got carried away.. George |

I concur with Ady1.. companies were / are only interested in short term profit... for the shareholders, with no long term view of business interests for this country, I too remember the 'eighties' when the common statement was ' Tom / Harry retires next month... who's going to replace him' ?. Companies were very reluctant to invest in apprenticeships per se; plus also very reluctant re 'Elf 'n' safety application in the plant or on site, now companies are asking the question 'who's going to fix this'? or .. 'you can't do that, H&S won't allow it. I served my time back in the sixties as 'Fitter / Turner & then separated out into Plant / Maint. fitter .. ( with the approval of the AEEWU..AEU ) then spent a lot of my career on contracts abroad & the North Sea.. inc. 2 yrs as 'Jnr & 4th Engineer' in the MN, plus positions as 'site / flank Engineer in the Middle east with responsibility for Gas turbine / pumping sites etc. Back in my time in the Middle East 1975 - 84, - 1998 - 2004, the title 'Engineer' was given by the Co. as & when you had the experience to run sites / plant with the ability to manage maint.teams & apply budgetary control, in my case 3 water distribution plants, 21 satellite stations, all the associated maint. people plus a budget of $1,000,000 (1 million ), & I have only a HNC from college. There are a lot of 'Engineers' around to day that I would use the term loosely, but in the same context there are a lot around that I would be pleased to call Engineers & that includes a whole raft of MEW members, I have taught 'Graduate Engineers' BSc, B.Eng. degree qualified, who in practical aspects, didn't know one end of a radial arm drill from another or what a 'datum point' was but would loose a lot of us with calculations on thermal heat loss of various insulating materials of buildings / furnaces et al, ... I am also a Tech.Member of I.O.S.H. (retired ) entitled to use letters after my name... so do I call myself a 'Safety Engineer'... ? George. Tech.I.O.S.H. My lathe is free standing; once I had the cabinets replaced I had previously laid a self levelling concrete pad on which I placed a thin rubber mat under ea. foot & levelled from that. I used a combination of my small level ( in previous pic. ) plus digital level to get as best as I could . I used a combination of a pair of 16mm HSS tool steel blanks & a 12mm blank on the front & back shears to reveal a zero twist & a 0.1* rise at the tail stock end, which doesn't overly worry me as long as I have the zero twist which is more important. The hold down bolts at the Tail / headstock ends were only just nipped up .... Headstock reading.. zero twist.. Tailstock reading.. zero twist.. Front shear .. 0.1* rise at Tailstock.. Rear shear.. 0.1* rise at Tailstock end.. Test piece after levelling & tailstock alignment check.. 0.00045" difference.. less than 1/2 thou' over 6".. good enough for me.. George. Nice Job Geoff... my machine came provided with a similar auto-eject set up ( Warco 250 V-F ) but without the handle; all I use is a 12 point socket, & a ratchet to nip up / eject the tool, have not had to use a 'Potential to Kinetic energy convertor' for a long time. George. |

I fitted a Dickson type QCTP to my 250.. no need for any plate under the tool post but had to machine the boss off which was no big deal.... In case you're wondering the knurled pin is for anti rotation purposes...it has been asked before George

Use an angle grinder, so whether it's case/through hardened job done in one go & if you're careful to cut through reasonably square just dress the end & Bob's your auntie... Mabel's your uncle.... I would have used a 1/2" slot mill in the mill machine & plunge cut down or an end mill coming in from the OD as in your original set up, just take lighter cuts, or use a ball end mill as said, bearing in mind theoretically you can cut a depth of 1/2 the cutter dia.
