Thread: Dore Westbury milling capacity |

Chris. I attached a laser from a cheap level horizontal on the head and with a vertical line on the wall at right angles to the mill all one dose is when lifting or lowering the head just reset to the verticle line .You mentioned that you are using a bottle jack to lift the head,is your column smooth and dosen't have a screw thread as all of the DW, I have seen do. I owned a mk1 DW and it gave me great service, like all machines you use it to it's capabilities,it will tell you if you are asking to much.Lifting the head and loosing position was my reason for changing to an sx3 ,I did fit a laser to assist in resetting the head which helped. The head height is great. For a light machine it has a lot going for it. Have a look at my qctp in my album it is easy to make and can be made to fit any lathe .the one in the album was made for my Myford. The toolholder is clamped onto the topslide so there is no overhang, very quick in use and it dose not have the jacking screws that are often in the way on a Dickson type. Thread: Engineering Origin of a Common Phrase? |
28/05/2016 17:14:38 |
The term cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey, originates from when warships stored canonballs iniron monkeys on deck. The iron rusted and the two were stuck together.Making the monkeys from brass solved the rusting problem but in freezing conditions the brass contracted and popped the balls off. I have a Myford S7 mark 1,I had this reground at Myford 2005 and have never regretted it.It is so accurate I prefer it to the S7 large bore for the odd jobs that require precision.I would certainly have it done. Frank |

Thread: Basic Clock Design |
17/04/2016 18:48:23 |
Books by John Wilding have all you need to know about the basic clock designs, his straight foreward approach to his text is easy to follow.I started out by reading a book of his from the library and built two astronomical regulators. The first to my own design to take account of my lack of equipment and knowledge.I had to fix the wheel sizes on a needle file for tooth and space,I set out the teeth with a disc of paper glued to the blank and carefuly set out the divisions, filed out the teeth and with with a pattern filed the crests.wooden pendulem rod and lead weight and bob. They needed to be heavy to overcome any discrepencies. Why I am saying this is that there is nothing wrong with your design and they don't have to be perfect to work ,this clock when finished kept time after much regulation to two seconds a week.My second clock [by now I was tooled]was a near copy of a Riefler regulator and has a 2degree of arc on the pendulem and is driven by a 1.5lb weight .Don't get bogged down with to many technicalities get stuck in. Thread: Recommissioning lathe size of hole to cut for belt |

Martin, your lathe is a pre 1908 when the B series was introduced,is the nose thread the same as the B and if so I have a converter that I made which fitted over the drummond nose and has a thread above which carries a Myford thread.I used a ER collet chuck with a Myford thread and this made the lathe more useful.I also have a fine feed that attaches to the rear of the spindle and walks the gears over on an eccentic I think I have a a chuck with a B backplate ,The fine feed the adapter and the chuck you can have if you want them .I also have a Drummond taveling steady but I would want the same as I paid for it £70

There is an excellent article and drawings to make a loose jaw vise for the milling table in an old ME magazine.I made this vise and it is one of the most usefull tools I have made.I have other vise but seldom use them in preference to this one .I loaned the magazine to a friend and I will ask him for the magazines issue number and will post it tomorrow. Thread: cost of building a 1" & 2" Minnie or similar |
30/03/2016 08:08:40 |
The cost of the castings is only the start ,unless you are well kitted out with machines and tooling you will find the cost is something that you dare not factor in .After comleting the 2" Gold Medal Tractor after 29 years of intermitant work I have no idea of the final cost. The engine is great now finished and it is all I can lift into the car Frank |
