Is this what you are looking for? I made this out of a bit of bar in the"will come in handy" box. One of the first things I made with my 1906 Drummond lathe.pumpcentre2.jpg

Thread: Purchasing an unknown build
19/02/2020 19:51:00

I second what others have said about joining a local club. I joined my local club and the majority of the members have been really helpful and supportive. I bought a 5inch loco off one of the members, full history from when it was built. Full steam certificate, I had seen it running and the seller has helped me learn how to fire, maintain and run it. Also remember that you will need a track to run on... John

I think the chap with shovel on shoulder, on the pavement/sidewalk behind the tailboard of the waggon deserves his own 'bubble' Ahh, comeon, I've only just finished levelling this section !

Or he could be saying "These horseless carriages will do us s**t shovelers out of a job" .

Thread: Oiling
12/02/2020 20:10:13

Good evening SB i have just bought a 5inch loco to platy with whilst I build my own Loco and have been wondering the same. I asked another member at my local club and he said "use Steam Oil it will stick everywhere" Looking at the underneath of my 5inch loco I can believe it. It does seem very hit and miss to me though. Thread: Wilson Slant Bed Lathe

EGA Many thanks John

09/02/2020 10:49:03

Many thanks for your comments. if the lathe was mine I would buy the manual from Tony but it is a friends. Doubt he will want to spend money even though he got all of the machinery for nothingfrown.

EGA could you tell me exactly what the manual covers please and what do you suspect is wrong with the gear selector. As to the steadies etc we are still sorting out what he has got, boxes, tubs, racks of stuff. A full workshop in a container?? John

Good evening all. A friend who doesn't use the internet has just gained a Wilson Slant Bed Lathe, and a lot of other machinery. We have got the Wilson running but have no information on it. I have looked on lathes.co.uk, very interesting but did not have information that we required. What we really need is an operators handbook. Does anyone have one to spare or one that I can scan please? I have been told one is available for £40.00 which seems a bit steep.crook Thanks for any help that you can give John

Thread: Hercules Steam Crane Tubal Cain
28/01/2020 09:51:14

Regards cylinder lifting off port face, I completely agree with you Jason about some oscillators not being able to lift off but after looking at the design for this engine/crane it can lift. It uses a spring to keep cylinder on portface. Whether you wish to add drain cocks or not is down to personal choice but Tubal Cain didn't appear to think them necessary. John

27/01/2020 21:13:33

I would think that drain cocks would not be necessary on an oscillating engine. Surely the cylinder will lift off the standard allowing any condensate to escape? John

Thread: Learning CAD with Alibre Atom3D
26/01/2020 14:31:33

I have just bought a 3D printer and got it running. I have downloaded several objects from the web to print. I want to modify one of the designs, is it possible to import a stl file into Alibre Atom3d? I have tried but cannot see a way of doing it. I can export parts drawn in Alibre as stl files though. Thanks for any help John

Thread: No wonder my swarf bucket is full
04/01/2020 20:42:52

Now I understand why metal is so expensive. It must be a really skilled job to be able to pack all of that swarf into such a small volumewink

Thread: Myford super 7 oiling

Many thanks for the pictures John, I have tried several oilcans but just end up with oil everywhere. Will make some brass swarf tomorrow. JC

Must admit that I never bother to seal the edges of MDF just go straight on with Dulux Trade quick dry Primer/Undercoat, just off to get some more after lunch as I have 850kg of MR MDF to get painted for the current job.

850 kgs..? surprise hells bells Jason watch your back.

I expect he's making a full-size version of Derek's half-track!

No not a half track, just making shelving to keep all of his engines on!!cheekywink 2

Thread: Painting! There one day, gone the next!
09/11/2019 22:33:52

Just adding to a previous comment, when I worked for a vehicle maker several panels were made of aluminium we had quite a few complaints of paint coming off. I did a test of sanding panel and then etch priming after different lapses of time. We found that panels had best adhesion if etch primed within 30 mins of sanding. It is surprising how quickly ally will start to create an oxide coat after sanding!!!!!!

Thread: What to do with a stationary engine

What a bit of light hearted FUN. We had a home built go-cart with a Lister in it after we totaled the original BSA bantam engine..... embarrassed

Thread: Simple Vice Stop
26/10/2019 22:15:31

I know this is an old thread but many thanks Jason. I have just made a vice stop to your design/plan and really pleased with it. It is one of those simple additions to the workshop that you wonder how you managed without it.. Many Thanks, John

Thread: How many Hammers
26/09/2019 20:47:01

I can relate to "training" a new hammer, I have over 30 hammers of various sorts and sizes but for panel beating go straight to a couple of Snap-On hammers that have fitted my hand for over 35 years. They came as a set of 3 and the odd one has only been used about 6 times, it just feels wrong??????
