Hi Raymond, welcome to the forum. Model engineering seems to have no boundaries. You only have to ask on here and help is suggested or you may have information useful to others. David |

Thread: Clarke CL300M lathe faulty control box |

Hi Barry the other fault which can cause this fault is the potentiometer with the knob can be faulty and that needs checking as well. You need someone with electronics skills to check the board and pot. etc you can have a look at the cables to see if any have come loose or solder joints faulty but I would get someone with a bit more information to hsve a look. When making jigs and fixtures for RR we had to use unbrako made socket screws where required and proof was supplied. We found other makes had slightly different head sizes and somtimes the socket was a diferent size for the Allen key. We didn't have any tests for materials. David |

Just been putting away bits and pieces and tools and noticed I had a collection of old boxes. I don't know why I have so many pastille boxes.

Hi Keith welcome to the forum. I am a retired toolmaker and having got a lathe tried milling on the lathe and found it very restrictive and so bought a small mill from Chester and wouldn't go back. If you have the room that is the way to go. Just look carefuly at the mill you buy as the one I bought has a Z axis handwheel at the back of the column and I did a mod to fit a bevel gear to make it more accessible. David |

Hi Andrew just use a piece of aluminium 6082 / HE30 alloy. No problem with corrosion and good strength. Loctite in place if nessesary. David |
Thread: Oil Blacking |
30/12/2022 20:42:55 |
Hi again Martin. I have run a commercial blacking unit and it is a bit dangerous. Firstly you have to wear a full face helmet, a thick waterproof full apron, boots with protection that comes above bottom of apron and long gloves which are caustic proof. The caustic soda was heated by gas flame temperature controlled under a ceramic heat proof container it was about a meter by a meter and a half by half a meter deep. The top edge of the tank had grooves to hold the suspension bars which hold the components on wire loops and hooks. A frame lifts the bars and runs on a track above the tanks and lowers with a pully into each tank in order. The second tank contains water which dilutes and washes the caustic soda off which is checked and treated for caustic levels. The third tank contains lanolin oil ( from sheep fleece ) which drips back into tank when removed from tank. The lanolin prevents any corosion from water. It looked ike a bench for loading frames, followed by caustic tank, followed by lanolin tank followed by cleaning water tank and last bench with slope and drainage grooves back to lanolin tank. I have oil blacked many steel things. I heat the object till it is not enough to start the oil burning and keep hot till it stops then repeat until it looks black all over. This is not recomended if the heat is going to affect any heat treatment. David Edited By David George 1 on 30/12/2022 13:24:29 |

Thread: High Tensile Steel Question |
27/12/2022 07:44:12 |
EN16T is the correct steel for high tensile bolts. You can get a meter length for around £25.00 delivered price. It machines well but use a tool with a small radius so you don't cause sharp corner fracture points. David |

I use EN32B steel for base hardening. It is easily machined, welded with no problems and forms a tough core with a hard skin when case hardened. David |
Thread: Rotary Table setup |
23/12/2022 07:08:31 |
Hi Vic I bought a rotary table and three jaw chuck of the same diamiter to mount on top. The one thing I forgot to take into account was the chuck had three equally spaced mounting holes and the rotary table had four equal T slots so I had to make a mounting adaptor plate to go between the two. It wasn't a problem but just another job and it slightly reduces the usable height under the spindle. David |
Thread: Soldering cast iron |
22/12/2022 07:48:22 |
Hi David I was given a cast iron base casting for a Stuart steem engine. If had been cast faulty with a piece of the base not filled. I cleaned up the area and made an insert of cast iron to match with a little to clean up after soldering. Fluxed and heated in a hearth to keep in the heat in with my blow torch and silver solder no problem. David
