Thread: petrol blowlamp
11/09/2013 15:37:38

Cyril

I have petrol blow lamps in two of my model boats one is in a victorian steam launch about 3 feet long with a Reeves V twin oscilating engine and a centre flue boiler and has a good turn of speed. A run time of about 10 to 15 mins the lamp goes out before the water level gets to low.

In this boat I could not get an lpg system to work not enough heat and the small disposalable gas cylinders didnt last very long.

The other is a flash steam powered straight runner with Alan Raymans high speed marine steam engine in it the engine is based on a ST 10 cylinder casting. The boat will plane and does the maximum allowed speed of 12mph I think this may be slower now days. The blow lamp is 1 1/4" diameter and the boiler coil is 15 feet.

Both fuel tanks when in regular use were tested at the local ME club by the boiler tester along with the boiler. Nice and easy to use cheap to run better on leaded petrol the nozzles dont block up yes you can still get it.

Thread: Tether Car ID

Rob

I race modern tether cars, the best way to get your car identified is to contact Hugh Blowers via this website. www.onthewire.co.uk It also has a gallery of old car pictures on it that might help identify it.

Bob

Keep it up it is a fascinating project, guns of all types are of interest to me they are engineering but with a twist the skills of a gunsmith I was lucky enough to build a rifles under his supervision (all legal and above board) and I learnt a whole new range of fitting skills using a smoky flame. amongst others

Thread: What did you do today? (2013)
18/07/2013 08:34:35

Paul

Keep up the good work I like the fast side of model engineering, I am going to miss you and Bob at Kingsbury again. I am competing in the Tether Car World Championships in Switzerland. I hope to exceed 200 mph again with my 10cc car. The 2.5cc car wont be as quick but it is certainly a chellenge to get the 40,000 rpm out of the engine with any consistency.

Thread: "salt bath" to soften metal
19/06/2013 08:38:44

At school if I remember correctly for tempering aluminium for forming we would rub on hand washing soap and gently heat until it went black it was then soft enough form. But it was a long time ago I wonder if modern soaps would work.

The vice method will work make sure the punch is sharp and use soapy water as a lubricant or it can be ground using coarse emery to start then to smooth.

Notlob, You should be able to hold the spindle with an oil filter type wrench with a rubberised fabric strap.

Thread: I have a weight problem.
24/05/2013 15:08:28

Paul

I have no idea on the weight of paints, when I built my B class steamer (8lbs) I could not afford the weight of paint the wood was sealed with model aircraft sanding sealer and then a two pack varnish called areokote. The hull was built from 1/32 " plywood to save weight my other big saving was the boiler casing was 4 thou stainless shim in and out with a thin ceramic blanket sandwiched between to keep the heat in.

I am currently modifing one of my 2.5cc tethered car engines, I am not happy with the alignment of the crankshaft bearings so a new steel front end is being made and fitted in place of the existing aluminium one.

I am struggling to source new bearings with C3 clearance they are 10x22x6 and 10x19x5, any ideas have trawled the internet with no success.

They need to be good quality as the engines revs around 37500rpm ones with ceramic balls would be better.

Thanks

Oliver

Thread: High Tensile: What Steel Grade?
03/05/2013 14:01:08

Chris

I would go with EN 24T it is readily available not difficult to machime or run a die down. I use it ctankshafts in high performance model engines when I cant find a 8.8 bolt to make them from. not very technical but it works. It a much nicer steel to work with than silver steel.
