There should be a hole in the body of the chuck to accept a bar - I use a screwdriver pushed through. Hold it with that whilst you tighten the nut.

— or 2 flats on the chuck body to take a spanner. You hold that element with one spanner and tighten the nut with another spanner (either a conventional spanner if the nut has flats or a C-spanner if it has notched indents).

Come to think of it, machine spindles that have a locking mechanism are the exception rather than the rule.

Or a knurled ring on the holder body which you hold with one hand and a C spanner on the nut which is what I have.

Hi Notlob,
How do you prevent the spindle turning when tightening the draw bar ?

Les.

I have a Warco VMC with a ER32 chuck supplied by them and no means to lock it when tightening the nut.

It is not like a Vertex one I have with spanner flats (different taper)

I used a carbide end mill to create some spanner flats on the Warco ER32 chuck.

On my Myford VME vertical milling m/c there was no means of locking the spindle so I made one! Underneath the large front pulley there are a series of what I presume are balancing holes, it was a simple matter to knock up a block and sliding pin to locate in one of these holes whilst tightening the draw bar.

It may be that the Warco VMC has something similar?

I probably will have to buy another collet holder one with spanner flats

Notlob, You should be able to hold the spindle with an oil filter type wrench with a rubberised fabric strap.

Notlob,

I faced exactly the same problem as yourself with my ER32 holder, but since one of the reasons I chose my Myford VMB milling machine was because of the 3000 RPM top speed, the solution was relatively simple. I modified an R8 stub arbour to accept a grinding wheel I had in stock , then set up the collet holder vertically onto an angle plate on the milling macine table, protected all exposed machined surfaces, installed a front safety guard for myself, and then, ensuring I was below the MOS, ground a pair of flats on the holder body to suit a Clarkson collet chuck spanner I had in stock.. One thing I did particularly ensure was that I only presented the holder to the wheel AGAINST the direction of rotation since I did not want it to grab.

Hope you will find this info of some use.

Trevor.

My ER-25 chuck has the same problem. At the top of the mill there is a tubular nut with flats on it that the drawbar jacks against when releasing. I used to do that nut up as tight as I could and hold it with a wrench when tightening/loosening the collet nut.

That was OK when tightening the collet nut of course. As with all my ER chucks, I don't overdo the chuck tightening - just a little nip - nonetheless at intervals when loosening the collet nut, the top nut would loosen and I'd have to remove the whole chuck and put it in the vice with soft-jaws to undo it.

Then I bought an ER-32 chuck which had proper flats on it which I prefer anyway since the size range suits me better and I rarely use the ER-25 any more.

is the body of your chuck hardened? If not, why not drill three holes for a tommy bar?

If it is hard, a carbide drill might still drill it.
