123 forum posts | I bought one of these for oiling the nipples on my machines. I can't get it to work! Can anyone confirm that they are suitable for use with oil rather than grease?!
Thanks.

You have the Myford type of oil nipples and finding a suitable oiler that does not leak oil all over the place is not easy. The ones supplied by Myford when the company was still alive were prety poor and I suspect they were meant for grease. It is possible to adapt a grease gun for use with oil (details on internet ) and I have been meaning to try this for ages, but might just give it a go now that you have indirectly reminded me. Doug |

However, the gun linked to in the original post says for grease, so no, it is not suitable for oil. Even the ones I have specifically designed for oil have a propensity to leak as much oil as gets into the slideways. Regards, Andrew |

337 forum posts 8 photos | Hi Chris, Looking at the grease gun & your grease nipple, it should work with oil or grease. What is it doing/not doing? Does it work OK with grease? Some nipples have a flat top,as in Myford ML7. Regards, Bear.. |

123 forum posts | I've never used one of these before. I unscrew the cap at the end then pull out the rubber bung which is attached the the mechanism, then pour oil inside. The oil goes inbetween the outside casing and the internal cylinder. Do I need to fill the cylinder where the piston is to prime it or something? |

1504 forum posts 142 photos | As it's a new gun, have you given it a good pumping to prime the inside cylinder. If it has a tight seal at the back end then it might be OK with oil, but be prepared for some leaks. I have found that that type of grease nipple head on the gun will fit onto Myford domed nipples, but won't come off! You need to slacken its grip by unscrewing the head from the stem. Phil |

123 forum posts | Thanks for that. PIT tried it again last night and got it working, I need to fill the inner cylinder as well. It doesn't seem to be able to get oil though the nipple though. I put a nipple in a vice and used the grease gun but it didn't go through the nipple, I bought a new nipple to try today and still the oil doesn't get through to the inside of the nipple. Although when you remove the grease gun from the nipple there is pressure there. Do I just need a more powerful oil gun? Edited By Chris Pocock on 15/05/2013 17:39:39 |

Many thanks, |

![]() 2929 forum posts 41 photos | One thing I have found is that placing one thickness of clean cloth between the nipple and the oil gun stops the leakage at that point. regards the cap leaking, try and get a leather washer that is a good fit in the cap. The nipple that will not let oil through is quite a common thing, the one on my tail stock is the same. I fitted a new one and now it is fine. Clive |

123 forum posts | I tried it in a few nipples. The oil only comes out after you remove the pump from the nipple, it obviously won't go through the nipple ut there is a build up of pressure before the nipple. I tried a grease gun I found on one last night and it was fine so I've ordered another grease gun of the same design.
Thanks. |

426 forum posts 1 photos | I bought a tecalemit oil gun off fleabay and it has the same kind of connector as the OP. It looks like a real gun with a pistol grip and the spring is pretty strong so that you have to really push on to the nipple before it pumps. That stops it leaking. I'll post a pic in the morning.
