Now I know you are all going to roll your eyes and say you should know better, but I think I might have missed something here.

I have a new job which takes me to Jeddah for two weeks of the month and as its that special time in the month when my favourite mag falls through the letterbox, I thought don't worry I can read it on line. But it would appear not as I seem to be unable to view the digital issue this month. Although my subscription doesn't expire until the end of the year, I can't read this months issue. Is there a way round this? Can I upgrade or do I have to wait until the renewal is due.

Very disappointed as there isn't much in the way of engineering over here, just a lot of sand and camels!!

Have you been able to read any of the digital MEW issues recently as it looks to me like you have a print only subscription which means you won't be able to access the digital archive.

If yoer were able to read more than a month ago then its likely you do only have a print sub as the change came into effect last month.

I assume you are using the link on the green bar?

I'm afraid that it appears the long-awaited policy change to only making the online digital copies available to print+digital or digital subscribers has finally happened.

There was a year's notice that this would be withdrawn in July 2014.

I know this change will upset a few folks, but the following notice has been on the site for about a year:

Hello Neil,

I am also in a similar situation and only have a print subscription. Can I upgrade to print+digital now, or do I have to wait to January, 2015 when my current subscription expires ?

I live in Australia, so a bit costly to ring the service team phone number.

Regards, Paul.

Sorry Paul, I'm not sure if you can 'pro-rata' buy digital for the balance of your print sub, I will try and find out.

It says you can 'upgrade'. Problem is no one ever answers the phone and it doesn't recognise my subscription number when I try to do it on line ???

Hi John,

Are you calling in office hours?

I have sent a long list of questions to the subs team, as I would like to offer some comprehensive information on subs issues, including contact details etc.

The head of is away for a couple of weeks so it may be a while.

Neil, yes calling in office hours. I called 5 times last week and listened to that nice lady and then a nice man. They encourage me to hold but after 5 or 6 minutes I get fed up. Should I try 10 minutes next time ?? John

i was also disappointed that I cannot access the digital element on this site I renewed my subscription as I did for many years but I can only afford the print subscription and I did get the benefits but now it has all gone.

I wonder what MEW & ME are going to do for its readers with the extra revenue they are getting or is it just a profit thing to increase the top line sale's

I am having a rant gerrrrrrrrrrrrrr..

Martin I've just PM'd you the details

Edit - for anyone else if you go to "settings" along the top green bar it should give these details if you have entered them at some time in the past.

Martin (or anyone else with problems), can email [email protected]

I have not been told of the reason, but my assumption is that the thought process was if print readers can access the digital editions, why should anyone fork out for a digital subscription (even with the extra functionality?)

So, to be honest, the online 'archive' has been a bonus freebie for print subscribers. I think it was put in place when not many people really understood (or wanted) digital magazines.

Cost wise, digital is £9 cheaper than print. Print+digital is £9 more than just print. £9 is not a huge amount bearing in mind that there are real costs associated with making digital editions available and you get extra benefits.

I am hoping to discuss making a '25 years' DVD of MEW available with the publishers soon, which would give much better access.

Now that is a good idea !! ... Yes Please ...

Dare I ask how the Publishers will handle DRM ?

Jason,

Thanks for PM, it gives me a few months to save up the extra £9.00, or not smiley

I spend several days a week away from home and have found it useful if I forget to take the printed version with me.
