Harrogate 2014 in Pictures

Following my visit today, I have posted an article on this year's Harrogate Exhibition HERE.

It was a really enjoyable day, thanks to everyone I met and my apologies to those I missed.

Hi, not been able to find time to go this year, which is a shame, I would have liked to have seen the scrap yard exhibit as well as everything esle of course.

I found the scrap yard exhibit depressing given I have driven about every model of vehicle in there.

Sod it I am not getting demoralised or getting a bus pass, if I retire and get a bus pass I'll just be another sad model engineer

It's hard to believe that this time last year I was at the exhibition at Harrogate and enjoyed every minute of it. I was interested in the photographs of this years show and going a slight colour in green in the process! At least three of my Aussie friends will be there so I will get to hear all about it and it will be interesting to hear their comments. I had to be content with displaying the model Lister engine and the unfinished Saunderson and Mills tractor at the local agriculture field day. Met lots of interesting people and made new contacts and converts to model engineering. I hope all those who were able to go to Harrogate enjoyed as much as I did last year.

Great show was it not.

I wonder if you or anyone else can help me I saw and spoke to a gentleman that had modified a Quorn cutter and grinder in length and in different options available. He was selling a book of photos and plans for the modifications . I was supposed to go back to see him to buy the book . But time and my memory got in the way. I cannot even remember the stand he was on.

I am sorry to have missed you yesterday, Neil, and Diane too. I thought the scrapyard was wonderful! We get so used to seeing shining, perfect models, 'Glen Rowan' was one of the best, I thought, that it is quite a shock to see smashed and moss-covered old transport piled up any old how, which is how they were, of course, in real scrapyards. There used to be a commercial vehicle scrapyard near Bingley, West Yorkshire (Eddie Fort's) which seems to have stopped buying stock in about 1950, but was the place to go if you were restoring such vehicles. It was fascinating to prowl around looking at all the wagons I had never seen running on the road.

I too was very taken with the scrapyard, it was quirky and quite different to the polished and shiny work elsewhere in the Exhibitition.

I think it takes a special kind of skill to create the air of neglect and decay it so cleverly modelled. The trawlers at the quay side were aniother skilled diaorama.

As usual I very much enjoyed my day, I was chauffered to and fro by my good neighbour who also provided lunch. Mind you, I bought the tickets. I was there Friday and missed a lot of people as a result.

I went to Harrogate yesterday(Sun) & as usual there was a gamut of superb exhibits, I was intrigued & impressed with J.Eva's 'scrapyard', I asked him what inspired him to come up with it to which he commented, tongue in cheek I assume.. 'women drivers'. I assumed that his Mrs had heard it umpteen times over the weekend.. ?

I bought a few bits 'n' pieces that I needed mainly some indexible tips, a couple more 'Dickson' type holders & other bits, some ally bars... price of ally & brass has shot up!. It's a pity Chronos / Arc euro were not there as I was looking to get some items off ea. but there again Ketan did say on this forum that he wouldn't be there so no surprise, never the less you always like to look at what you intend to buy where you can, s'pose I'll have to wait until the end of month to order on line.. being a pensioner & all that . A good day out never the less.

Hi Neil, I had a great time at Harrogate and it was good good to catch up and have a chat. I also enjoyed chatting with Derek Brown who has inspired me to dig the Quorn castings out from under my bench and make a start.

Yes Dave, I also had a good chat with Derek and a nice demo of drill grinding, so I'm inspired to get the castings out and continue the build, especially as im running out of sharp endmills!

I agree with this. It reminds me of Eric Morecambe's piano playing (yes, I've been told I have unconventional thought processes before) - but do you see what I mean? A particular kind of genius ...

I went on Saturday as a visitor and thought the show was great, as usual.

I always like looking at the scrapyard display. Not exactly sure why. When ever I see it I just have to stand and think about how much effort was taken to get that realistic detail. It cant exactly be made to a plan or drawing.

On another note, really liked the build-in-progress of the F4U Corsair. Very difficult to get the gull wing right.

Used to fly the radio control versions of these some fourteen years ago. My first build was a write-off. Just couldn't get the shapes built right!. Then got a ready made one, and wrapped it around a goal post during one of the landings. These planes have to be 'flown-in' at relative speed, rather than glided in...similar to spitfires.
The third model survived, and got given away once I gave up the hobby.

It will be great to see if the builder of this model will actually 'fly' it. It really is an intersting build.
