Thread: Harrogate 2014 in Pictures |
14/05/2014 22:23:51 |
Hi Neil, I had a great time at Harrogate and it was good good to catch up and have a chat. I also enjoyed chatting with Derek Brown who has inspired me to dig the Quorn castings out from under my bench and make a start. All the best, Dave |
Thread: Dates for Harrogate 2014 |
29/04/2014 00:31:16 |
Hi Steve, the garden sounds good as does the tea room. I think Therese will find lots to do it Harrogate while I'm at the exhibition. Well today is the big day, we leave for the airport in a couple of hours (Sydney) then off to Dublin with a couple of changes (Bangkok and Dubai) so it will be a very long day ahead. Cheers and see you there! Dave |

excellent! Thanks Gavin |

Thanks John, I'll do that. Regards, Dave |

Thanks Gavin, ticket booked for the Saturday (I'll be driving over from Holyhead ferry terminal on Friday). In case I don't see everything on the Saturday and want to return again on the Sunday (quite likely), can I buy a ticket at the show for the following day to avoid the queue on Sunday? If you can work with module gear cutters than I would also recomend CTC tools. Their cutting tools are very good quality and very good value. Regards, Dave |

Thanks for the ideas on how to entertain SWMBO while I sneak away to the exhibition. Using these techinques it may be possible for me to visit for all three days, although it does provoke images of us over-doing-it a bit and having to scrounge through rubish bins to feed ourselves for the remainder of the holiday ; } Best regards, Dave |
23/05/2013 06:47:50 |
Ok, looks like Sunday is the best......but I might try and get a leave pass for a second day, just have to find something that might keep SWMBO busy so she doesn't notice I'm missing ; )
Thanks again one and all, Dave |

Thanks for all the good advice, I will probably only get one day so I'll make sure to get there early and make a full day of it. Am I right in assuming the Friday would be the least croweded day? All the best, Dave |

Thanks, I'll plan on the first week of May and give Lou an email. I'm getting a bit excited at the idea of visiting the Harrogate show. All the best, Dave |
20/05/2013 10:43:03 |
Hi, my wife and I are planning a holiday to Britain next year and SWMBO has agreed to me visiting a ME exhibition while we are there. I'm guessing that Harrogate in May would be nice, does anyone know the dates for 2014 yet? Regards, Dave from the Colonies |

Hi there, just to add to the debate, I have read that in gunsmithing circles (hi value workpieces and small taps) they use carbon taps so that WHEN you break one it is so brittle it can be hit with a punch and shattered and the pieces picked out. They also have a keener edge than HSS but not as durable. Regards, Dave |
Thread: Problem with Eagle PCB design software. |
30/12/2010 11:27:15 |
Posted by Stub Mandrel on 29/12/2010 21:46:34: Not strictly engineering, but I havea problem with Eagle Light PCB design software that someone may be able to help with?
Put simply, eagle refuses to recognise some connections on the board which are OK on the schematic. Other 'airwires' it refuses to autoroute, even when these are as simple as two capacitors (large and small) in parallel and the tracks could go where the airwires are. there are no other apparent restrictions.
Am I missing something obvious (e.g. have I put things in some sort of ignore layer?) and if so what should I be checking for.
Thanks in anticipation.
Neil
Hi there, I don't know much about the application but perhaps your too far from the origin and hence it wont route tracks on the free version.
Also there is a keepout layer that maybe causing the problem, turn on some of the other layers and see if they overlap. Good luck, Dave |

Hi,
you could try a Phased Lock Loop (PLL) circuit. Look up (google) some application notes for CD4046 or HC4046 chips. The idea is that you have the Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) running at 60 times the input rate with a divide by 60 device in the feedback path to the phase comparator. The relatively low speeds may make lock-up times too long (the time time it takes to sort itself out) so some experimentation is required.

Thread: ER32 etc collets |

I also have a set of ER32 from CTC tools in Hong Kong. I also bought a spare closer nut with the MT3 chuck. The mill uses the MT3 chuck and the spare closer (which is a standard item but tricky to make) goes on the lathe. MEW has had at least one article about making a chuck for screw on noses.
Good luck,
Regards Dave |

Hi Martin,
"The peace and quiet is utter bliss, so much so that I am tempted to do a runner before they get back " - I'm hearing you brother!
"I can't stand my own cooking for more than a couple of weeks " - have you considered cooking lessons?
It doesn't get any easier when you become an 'empty nester' either because there is nobody else to 'share the load'.
Like you Martin, I wouldn't be without her but a break now and then where you are free to set your own priorities around the house (ie workshop time) is pure bliss!

Hi David,
Hope you had a good run in the workshop without too many distractions.
I was having a friendly dig because the machines in the magazine photos look so very clean, nothing like mine! The clean machines and uncluttered backgrounds do make the photos much more 'readable' and easier to understand the point being made in the picture.
Workshop time is also in short supply around here as I'm still working full time (probably will be for at least a couple of years after my death) but the daylight hours are getting longer again so things are looking up, but SWMBO is still the limiting factor for workshop time!

Regarding cleanliness, I get the impression you blokes keep a well polished, unused Myford just for your magazine photos. Just an observation from the colonies ![]() |
Thread: Diamomd tool holder |
16/08/2009 01:08:48 |
Hi Chris,
I know exactly what you mean about the time machine, I'm stuck in one of those as well. A holder just for threading would be excellent. As for those compound angles, they do my head in as well.
Good luck with getting it all together for the SMEE demonstration.
Best regards,
Dave |

The tangential toolholders give a good finish and is easy to use. The only issue I have noticed with mine (eccentric) is when thread cutting (the finished thread is excellent) you have to cant the tool holder around to the tailstock to get the tool square to the work and this limits how close you can get to the chuck or a large shoulder. Other than this the tool is excellent and the only carbide insert tool I regularly use is the parting tool (another must have).
Regards,
Dave
