Does paper subscription include digital copies

I'm a paper subscriber to both ME and MEW and I get regular emails to tell me the digital version is available. I have just bought an ipad - can I access ME and MEW through the "Newstand"? I can read the digital copies through a browser, and I have downloaded the Model Engineer App. I have tried to access the mags by putting in my subscription number and surname (as shown in my profile on this site), but it is not accepted. I am then directed to Pocketmags, who seem to want me to pay an additonal £3.99 for every copy.

Have I misunderstood, what I should be getting for my subscription? If not what do other users do? I am keen to move away from paper copies as I already have about 10 feet of shelving devoted to these mags and I am about to downsize house.

Regards, Andy

Andy,

Ignore the App .. just use the "Digital Issues" link in your "My Account" box at the top left corner of this page.

There should be no problem Andy, I recently subscribed to MEW and can read the issues either through this website or via Newstand on my iPad. I have to say that reading them on the iPad is a superior experience to using a web browser on a PC.

In theory if you go onto th subscribe area on the right of the header you can then enter your digital subscription no. Worked for the ME's but not the MEW one. Iemailed about it and they want ALL the info from the plastic wrapper. Who keeps that? So I have to wait till next month's edition. Hmmmmmm.

SorryJohn I don't have the iPad handy at the moment but I recall I merely typed in my subscription number and it worked? The process wasn't memorable because there were no problems, but I'll look again at exactly what I did when I get chance.

Hi John

Log In ( Top Left)

In the "My Account" box that appears select " Digital Issues"

You will be given the option of the mags you subscribe to ( In my case MEW)

Click on the appropriate title and a list of all the available issues appears as copies of the mag cover pages.

Click on the appropriate issue and you will be able to see the contents.

( This was typed - and tried on our ( read my wife's) iPad which was a joint Xmas pressy a couple of years ago! Grrrrrr.

Cheers

Norman

Thanks all for the replies. I can read the digital issues through the Digital Issues portal on this page - I was wondering about Newstand on iPad and the Pocketmags app.

Thanks again,

John

John,

I presume that, like Andy, you are a "paper subscriber"

[... if that's not the case, then I give up]

Reading the description on the App Store: it appears that one can purchase either single copies or subscriptions in-App, and that these will be accessed via NewsStand.

BUT it's a different marketing channel, and a different profit-centre:

  • Paper subscriptions come with free web-access to the PDF archive.
  • App subscriptions come with NewsStand access, but no paper copy.

It's an either/or choice [unless you can justify paying for both]

... Hopefully, Chris can confirm my understanding.

You may be right michael, I'm a digital subscriber not a 'paper subscriber'.

Perhaps a moderator could clarify the situation to save us all guessing?

Thanks to everybody who has contributed. It seems that this is not as clear cut as I thought it would be.

I guess the crux of this is, can I download a magazine and then read it off-line (no wifi) on the beach. Or to put it another way, if I changed to digital subscription for a year or so and then cancelled would I still have my own copies of those year's mags? I often refer to back copies. It seems you can only access the ME site if you have a current subscription.

Regards, Andy

I may have got the wrong end of the stick here, but I seem to remember there being a link somewhere on the web site to download an app (not Newstand). This I did and I'm able to access MEW on the iPad without having to go through a browser. It doesn't always work faultlessly, but good enough for a quick look-see. Now that I think about it, I believe there was a thread about this or something similar, where some subscribers were asking for the app to be made available for Android devices.

Can't find the link to this app anywhere on the site, now, unfortunately.

Best of luck, maybe somebody else can point you in the right direction?

John

edit - just had a look and found the thread.  I don't know how to link to it - but if you search " Ippad/Ipod app" in forum thread titles, it should come up.

You only have access while you are paying a subscription and its not easy to save single pages or whole issues.

Thats why I have kept up my paper subscription . Plus its often easier to have the mag open at the side of the computer while replying to queries or drawing things up then keep flicking between screens.

Not sure if it is still valid, but might be worth checking out.

That's quite right and is, I find, the major disadvantage of digital "books" of all sorts. For instance a Kindle is excellent for fiction but, for reference material where you often need to flick back and forth, it's useless.

V8Eng,

Yes your link still seems to work O.K.

But, of course, that is only a "web App", which puts a what is effectively a shortcut onto the home screen of the iPad. ... The functionality is the same as the "Digital Issues" link from the "My Account" box on the forum.

When fully downloaded and installed, one tap on it at the home screen used to take me directly into the digital issues, simply by signing in with my email and password.

Thought that was what the OP was after, perhaps I miss understood the post.

I routinely sign in via the home page now instead, and am a digital only subscriber.

.

It still does ... but the end result is no different to the other route.

Unless I am very much mistaken: You stll need to be on-line to access the archive ... but the OP wanted to access back issues via NewsStand [i.e. stored locally on his iPad]

As Chris indicated earlier ... we really need someone from the Subscriptions department[s] to clarify what is on offer.

Is it just by chance that down the right hand side MHS now have a link that allows you to buy back issues from iTunes at $4.99 a pop?

My Ipad will not "remember me", meaning I have to fully log in to read every time. Any ideas how to get it to re beer me?

regards

Colin
