Thread: Boremaster Tiplap Grinder
06/04/2021 20:15:38

I have now emailed a copy of the manual to everyone who sent me their email address.

So that it available long term, I have since rescanned it using different software, so that the quality is better.

I have posted it on the Weymouth and District Model Engineers website under the project pages.

I am surprised so many people are following this old thread. I'll get my scanner going and see what I can do.

As I seem to be the only person with a manual, I'll see if I can put it on the club website for posterity.

It isn't a very exciting manual I'm afraid, so don't get your hope's too high. It is a lapping machine after all. I have found the Quorn manual useful.

I also have a Boremaster. I bought it at the Midlands show 4 years ago. It cost a lot more than 40 quid, but did come with most accessories and a manual. I believe the Quorn was based on this machine. I have fitted a dished diamond disc to mine. The MEW article is here :-

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.haythornthwaite.com/Adjustable%2520Grinding%2520Head.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjg_fSlkdDvAhVLShUIHXt2BegQFjASegQIDhAC&usg=AOvVaw0t0LlsA-Pk4xAUjBOfm55O

Unfortunately, mine didn't come with the drill sharpening head, so I am trying to make something using ER collets.

I can email a copy of the manual if you still require this information.

Thread: Whistle making, particularly the valve
27/01/2016 16:19:55
Thanks. I know what I need to achieve now. I couldn't find anything through Google.
27/01/2016 14:27:14
Thanks, that makes sense except that the valve is horizontal. There must be some complicated chambers to get the inlet and the outlet vertical. 4 inch scale is too small and 6 inch slightly too big.

Hi, does anyone know where I might find a drawing/design, for a whistle that incorporates a valve in the base below the bell. It is the design of the valve that I don't understand - the sort that has a pin operated by a lever. Commercial items aren't to the right scale for what I want. Cheers, Andy

Thread: ipad subscription
19/06/2013 09:18:31

Thanks to everybody who has contributed. It seems that this is not as clear cut as I thought it would be.

I guess the crux of this is, can I download a magazine and then read it off-line (no wifi) on the beach. Or to put it another way, if I changed to digital subscription for a year or so and then cancelled would I still have my own copies of those year's mags? I often refer to back copies. It seems you can only access the ME site if you have a current subscription.

Regards, Andy

I'm a paper subscriber to both ME and MEW and I get regular emails to tell me the digital version is available. I have just bought an ipad - can I access ME and MEW through the "Newstand"? I can read the digital copies through a browser, and I have downloaded the Model Engineer App. I have tried to access the mags by putting in my subscription number and surname (as shown in my profile on this site), but it is not accepted. I am then directed to Pocketmags, who seem to want me to pay an additonal £3.99 for every copy.

Have I misunderstood, what I should be getting for my subscription? If not what do other users do? I am keen to move away from paper copies as I already have about 10 feet of shelving devoted to these mags and I am about to downsize house.

Regards, Andy

Thread: Repeated articles
04/02/2013 10:10:13

Perhaps its just me, but I'm sure the article "My First Locomotive" in issue 4448 appeared in exactly the same form sometime last year. What with two other articles in the same magazine being from LBSC, I'm beginning to wonder if ME still represents good value.

Discuss.

Thread: Boiler fittings screw threads
31/05/2012 13:23:45

I have a steel boiler for a 7 1/4 narrow gauge loco. The original design in copper specifies 32 tpi threads for all fittings. This seems to me to be too fine for steel and Martin Evans suggests 26 tpi for steel boilers. Before I start drilling holes and making fittings, I wondered what experience others have had? Would 1/2 and 3/8 BSF be OK, or should I purchase the neccessary 26 tpi tools, or stick with the 32 tpi? Cheers, Andy
