Seems a lot of work to me when you can do the same with one gear to be changed.

I have just been doing a load of metric threads on some collets and DA chucks for my Boley/BCA jig borer. I had just finished setting up the metric gear train as per the chart inside the cover when I remembered the 33/34 trick, so I changed it all back to that set-up and it works a treat, along with the Meek screwcutting clutch it is so simple and quick to cut metric now.

I'm glad to see that there is a least one believer. The maximimum error in any thread using this system is 6 microns, that's 6/1,000,000 metres or 6/1000 millimeteres. Sadly, many people have unrealistic expectations of both their machines and their abilities and believe that any error is unacceptable - hence the oft quoted insistance that the only "correct" way to make metric threads on an imperial lathe is by using a 127 tooth changewheel. Relax, as Phil has shown; it's good enough!

cheers,

Rod

thank you Roderick for the tables in the other post. just the job.

6 microns - easy to work to if you happen to have a couple of millon pounds worth of kit, but not what you would find in the avearge shed.
