As I am in the market for a new lathe and milling machine I will often search on ebay with "lathe -wood" (lathe minus wood) but get all sorts of rubbish that is lathe related but NOT lathes. Do you know of any search technique that will deliver "lathe" - "lathe" and nothing but a lathe?

All depends on what you are looking for but try searching for Myford, Boxford, Colchester, Harrison, Warco, Chester, these are just some of the lathe manufacturers.

If you can expand on what type/size of lathe you are looking for I am sure we can assist in refining your search terms.

Do you want a large (6" + swing) or small (<5" lathe, gap bed or not.

What type of Mill are you looking for, bench top, Vertical turret, horizontal,Universal etc etc.

The more info you can give is better.

cheers

CB

Thanks CoalBurner - but I'd be quite happy with specific search results based on just "lathe" or "milling machine". I get the distinct feeling that I am stretching ebay search engine to breaking point - gives me a nice warm feeling insideface 20

In a word, no. I think that it is against the Ebay rules to post items such as generic cutters, which then include words like 'Myford' in the title. But unfortunately it is all too common, and a right royal PITA. The best you can do is search for specific models - say 'Harrison M300' or 'Myford ML7'.

In a sense that is no bad thing, as it forces one to think a bit more about exactly what it is that one is looking for.

Regards,

Andrew

"Lathe -wood" on eBay.co.uk gives, without setting advanced search options, ca. 8000 results. If you then set "Auctions only", and loose much of the trade, you get around 800 results, then you sort by "price: highest first" and you will have lost most of the rubbish. Niko.

Hi Stuart.

You can filter results a little. You say you're after a new lathe - do you mean new or used (new to you)? If it's a secondhand lathe you're searching for then filtering for used lustings will help considerably. The other way to further refine results is to select the appropriate category (on the left you will see a long list of categories where your "results" have come from.

Good luck in your search.

Mike.

If you just select 'newly listed' and look at it every day after about a week all have passed through the system anyway. If there is a particular day when loads of cutters or inserts come up you can take them out. Also select auctions and UK only too. It only takes a few minutes to go through the new stuff and whack interesting ones into your watch list. I look at this everyday specifically to find the odds and ends that are not actually lathes as I have one of those. After a while you get to know what rarely comes up and what is overpriced. You might as well do this as once you have the lathe and mill you are going to want the other stuff so you might as well get familiar with it now.

I do find it sad how many sales are by friends and relatives who have no idea what the item is that possibly grandad loving ly made or cherished.

This one shows more results without wood turning;

lathe -(wood, woodworking, woodturning, wood turning)

You could try model making metal lath, possibly add small the same for the miller.
