I see the editor is looking for ideas to put in the 200th edition.

What immediately occurred to me was how about a nice 12 part series on "Building your first steam engine". Something with plenty of brass in it so you can polish it up and put it on the sideboard.

Smashing.

Hi DerryUK,

Please read previous posts by others where there seems to be a consensus of opinion that MEW always has been and should continue to be used for workshop methods, ideas and making machines or parts of. Likewise, ME is more actual model making.

Rgds,

John

He asked for short single part articles, not for a series!

Presumably this means that the latest issue is plopping through your letterboxes. PLEASE, no long series. Certainly not about steam engines and the like. Not everybody like coal and hot water.

Apologies I have not read all posts. My post was tongue-in-cheek but was written with ways of increasing readership and circulation in mind.

Previously it has been stated that sales increase with an attractive cover picture, an old motorbike or car for instance. Just look at the last two cover pictures, and I mean no disrespect, they are examples of boring.

So to get new readers we need to give them something of interest. Now you old hands get all you want and you don't want it any other way. However I am a subscriber and see no issues with a little change. I can stomach CNC, I could wear a whole issue of MEW given over to CNC because I find it interesting.

So to get in new readers we need something attractive and different and interesting on the front cover. A nice steam engine would suit the purpose admirably.

BTW my tongue-in-cheek part I referred to earlier did of course relate to the 'lots of brass' comment. I would of course accept lots of chromium.

How about a CNC-only issue wink

Perhaps a CNC free edition?

Hi DerryUK

A good photo will increase sales.

However, a photo that does not tie in with an article inside the magazine attracts complaints.

I can't win.

regards David

Hi All

CNC does not have to cost the earth.....

I just came home from a club meeting in Melbourne OZ. The members are working together to make a kit for a small entry level 2 axis plus limited z axis Pen plotter. about an A3 size bed. The budget is 100 Australian dollars for the kit. (At cost non profit). All new materials not from bits, MDF frame.

The objective being an entry level CNC project. The plan is to make a batch to reduce costs.

It is a club build with many heads contributing their varied skills.

Group projects? Now there is an idea for MEW.

Cheers

John

How about an article from each of the editors, past and present, describing either a piece of workshop equipment or maybe recollections of their time as editor?

In keeping with the spirit and aims of MEW it should:

1/ be a workshop tool.

2/ be of long lasting appeal ie still be worth making by issue 300

3/ for a wide range of readers not niche (sorry not CNC but preferably adaptable)

4/ actually be a good design.

For example if it hadn't already been done something like a George Thomas dividing head would fit the bill.

Having said all that I really don't have a suggestion.

Tony.

I think you misunderstand what David meant. I'm sure he was saying that it should be all CNC, and free to all smiley

Martin.

No, you can't win!

If there is to be anything special in No. 200, keep it to yourself, or there might be some moaning in advance. Better to present it as a fait accompli.

Whatever it contains, I'm sure I 'll enjoy it just as much as all the other editions.

Andy

Martin -

You are of course correct - it's all in the (lack of) punctuation wink

Right in keeping with past precedents I vote we have a picture of Diane in a bikini posed at the side of a Myford lathe.

If it was good enough for Old Man Moore and Dave Fenners daughter it's good enough for ower Diane.

Lets have a vote, any one with a pace maker is excused.

Well as I have already said I'll go along with a CNC only 200th edition. Most new machines will be CNC by the 300th anyway.

Or how about John Stevenson in a bikini on the front cover. If nothing else it will give him an excuse to have a decent shave for once.

The lack of opposition to the ideas in the previous posts, is making me think this could actually happen.

Martin.
