I want a handful of compression springs to experiment with.

So I go look on the net to be presented with a bewildering number of wire thicknesses, diameters and lengths.

Is there shall we say a more 'usual' size thats used in model engineering or is there somewhere I can get a mixed box of a couple of dozen. I don't want 500 springs

Wolfie, you might not need it this time but suggest you bookmark this article

Its such a good and comprehensive article on spring making its been on the internet for years and is written by a true expert. If you ever "Have" to make a spring and its either largish, or smallish with thin wire , this article could also save either a broken bone or a poked out eye.

Alan,

That does look to be a truly useful site. However, Wolfie, you might also find the Tubal Cain book in the Workshop Practice series is worth having, it's only about £6.

Wolfie did you say you were going to Ally Pally, if so then you should be able to get something from the "pound land" type tool traders, either a mixed box or various individual springs.

Looked at the Screwfix spring selection today - very limited and mostly too big for about a tenner.

The Machine Mart equivalent may be better.

10Hi Wolfie,

David is Da Moderator - he has infinite power over us!!!

I need about 10 springs and took a look at this website:

Their spring calculator made it easy to find what I needed (1/4" diameter, 3/4" long and about 8lbs for 1/4" of sping compression (well 38 for an inch).

But... I have to buy 27 for the minimum order value of £8 + VAT and theres about £5.50 deleivery + vat, so probably about £16 minimum order value - which isa lot for the £3 of springs I actually need

But if you can find the springs you want on that website perhaps we could split an order?

But why did David remove -

Wolfie's question asking what Ally Pally was .... and also someone's reply telling him and giving him the link to the web page ..

Arn't we allowed to talk about Ally Pally ?

Strange that we are not allowed to talk about it, yet ME prints reports about the show in the mag, has a report in the articles section on this site and takes money from them to advertise in the mag.

Wolfie click "model making" at the top of the homepage and look atthe first article in "Exhibitions" and adjust the date to suit 2012.

If this is true, then this is outrageous!, and certainly does not conflict with the T's and C's or CofC for this site!

DC1 can you please clarify what content was removed from this thread and why

Hi There
I removed content relating to the ally pally exhibition.
I was asked to remove content, I think last year, about this exhibition by the exhibition owner.
Perhaps I will see what happens this year.
See post below.
regards David

Hi There
It has been reported on another website that the great new model competition at Alexander Palace where you get to keep the cups permanantly has been cancelled.
Can anyone confirm this?
Second item down on the left.

regards David

Thanks DC1,
odd that the exhibition owner would not want exhibition info posted here, or anywhere else for that matter, I would have thought the widest publicity possible would have been welcomed
It does seem crazy that we are not 'allowed' to discuss innocuous subjects such as this on a public forum, whatever happened to freedom of speech??

Thanks for explaining David, does seem strange though as they advertise the event in your mag.

whatever happened to freedom of speech?

Things are very different from 10 years ago, there's a lot of government legal and corporate stuff appearing in the mix, none of which improves the netty as far as an individual is concerned.

It was fun while it lasted though.
Consider yourself fortunate to have been there at the start, when the net really was a conduit for the freedom and exchange of ideas thoughts and information for the little people of planet earth.

Google recently managerd to make briansouter.com completely disappear
I presume his "crime" was the support of the repeal of section 28
