Hi all, we have just had another earthquake, this time with quite a number of fatalities here in Canterbury, But I fotunately missed the worst of it. Have not heard yet how Mark Smith in Christchurch has faired, thats where the damage was. You will see it all on the news, my cousins in Scotland have seen it.
It was a smaller quake, but shallower, and closer to Christchurch than the one we had in September 4th last year. Ian S C

Heard today from Mark Smith3, hes OK, staying with a friend. He had to move out of his house, its full of stinking mud and water. He did'nt say anything about his workshop, we might hear more as the days move on.
Hope any fellow modelers in Chch are OK, I'm sure there are some that look in to or website. Ian S C

My wife's sister lives in Christchurch, she and her family are OK.
I am awaiting the latest newsletter from the Otago Model Engineering Club, they are likely to have some information, depending just when they go to press.

Regards

I see that our UK local Hampshire/West Sussex Fire and Rescue lads are now out there with you, you certainly need all the help that can be mustered.

It is apparently due to the Australian continent shifting northwards at 3cm a year that also causes New Zealand to shift too. Hope all are safe and well. The last Earthquake in Suffolk was 1649 Although some of us felt the Yorkshire Quake here in Suffolk a few years back.

Hi Ian,

I thought of you when I heard the news but have only just been able to go on line.

My thoughts go to everyone affected and I hope there may still be a few miracles.

There are rescue teams from all over the world, USA, Scotland, Japan, Chinaand Austrailia, plus extra police from Aussy(over 300).
The NZ armed forces were in full gear, and on the spot, due to start a major excersise the following day, they got the real thing instead.Ian S C

Hi ian, just seen a bit about rescuers from around the world on our News 24. It tells of buildings that are very unstable and most will have to be demolished.

They talk of still over 200 people missing and the chance of finding survivers very low.

Wish all of you the best.

Regards Nick.

Hi all, yes I'm ok. My house is a mess but we are alive. My workshop is currently flooded with liquifaction and we have no power; may not have it for a week or more. My projects are on hold indefinately. My house has canted over a 1/4 bubble on the level. It has a concrete floor so they may be able to level it again, failing that it will be demolished. But that is small potatoes compared to the plight of many others.
Thanks for your concern
Mark

My boy is in Cambridge on the North Island. miles away, but it does stop the heart when you hear it coming over the news. Must be absolutely awful.

Time was when we could have got a commando carrier over there pretty fast, with its built in hospital, RO plant for water making, heavy lift helicopters, and engineers as well. All the sort of thing you need to support the civilian specialists, repair roads and bridges etc..

Well we don't have that sort of thing nowadays, so it can only be good wishes. Still I am very mindful that, when alongside the ANZUK brigade, we needed help very badly, our people couldn't fly till daylight, but the Kiwis did, in the most horrendous weather and hostile conditions, and thank God for them too.

So I for one rather wish we could do more.

Mark, Ian etc

Hoping for miracles for all concerned.

My heart goes out to you all!

Sadly most of the engineering regiment locally are already deployed in Afghan etc.

First chance of a look around parts of Christchurch over the weekend, its a mess. As I said on another thread, after the first EQ 38,000 tonne of silt was removed from the city, this time it was 300,000 tonne, and thats not counting the stuff that Marks got. After thats cleaned up theres all the rubble from the destroyed buildings and broken up roading etc. I think the first Aussies arrived by about midnight same day. Now there are teams from all over, Chillie, Mexico, UK, USA and about a dozen other places. We were fortunate that our navy had a frigate and 3 small patrol boats in port with the army on board going for an exersize ferther south, the port was cut off from the city, and the navy kept tthem going Theres an add on the radio just now for fitters and turners, and welders for repairing earthmoving machinery.
