“Christchurch NZ”
I am not an engineer by training, but my father was as he was trained as a fitter and turner at the New Zealand Railway Workshops in Addington, Christchurch and went on to work as a Marine engineer mostly on coastal shipping. I originally trained as a shoemaker and subsequently retrained as an Orthotist (we Measure Patients for appliances to overcome disabilities such as spinal injuries, Polio etc. We also measure make and fit surgical footwear for people with deformities and diabetes. I got interested in Model making 30 years ago but having a young family and a workshop that sported a hacksaw, file and electric drill the chance to do anything was rather remote and had to console myself with reading ME magazines from the library and dreaming. However as financial worries and the children moved on I was able to start aquiring the tools and machines needed to begin this fascinating hobby and you will have seen some of my efforts. I'm still not what you would call an "engineer" as much of what I do is made from found objects that I modify to suit, but I enjoy it. As time goes by I hope to gain the knowledge, skills and patience to produce work that could be proudly exhibited.
