Hi, I'm looking to fit a DRO to my Boxford and I like the look of the Newall Microsyn kit, nice and small and hopefully fairly easy to fit. I am looking for UK suppliers for Newall but so far my web searches haven't found any, plenty in the US but not here - strange as it's made in the UK. Any recommendations please?

Not sure if they do Newall but http://www.machine-dro.co.uk are worth a punt. They do a good range of DRO systems from budget upwards.

I bought mine from Chester UK Limited, albeit about six years ago, so I don't know if they are still agents. Have you tried contacting Newall?
 
I have been very pleased with my system, two axis, Microsyn encoders, installed on a Bridgeport mill. It is probably the single most useful thing I've ever bought for the workshop.
 
I've only had one problem, where the display got itself into a funny state. Over the 'phone a chap from Newall gave me some special codes to reset the unit, which worked a treat. He was probably correct in stating that the unit had suffered a glitch on the power supply. I live in a rural area and our electricity supply is pretty unreliable. The supply had a hiccup just before the unit went funny.

Kwil will likely be along soon and be able to advise, He's got their stuff on most of his machines, ask nicely and he will show you his topslide with the scale fitted internally.

Get in touch with your local Newall Rep. I have purchased all (4) my Newall DRO systems direct from Newall.  I have 3 axis, soon to be 4 axis on the Bridgeport,  2 and 3 axis on my Myford S7s. 3 axis on the Boxford VM30
 
As JasonB says, look at photo 7 in my album for topslide with internal scale fitted, size is identical to original Myford Topslide only of all home built parts.

Is this the top slide that was featured in MEW ?
I wondered what was fitted as nowhere was there a shot of the read head or any indication in the text what unit was fitted.

That looks a very nice set up Kwil - have you moved the saddle lock to the front of the saddle?
 
Hugh - I have an Allendale DRO fitted to my S7 and am very pleased with it.

John - is your Allendale DRO a glass scale type? I see that they now do magnetic strip types and I guess these are more robust. I have fitted glass scales to my mill but there's a lot more real estate available than on the lathe and the scales are far enough away from the action to have a fair degree of protection. I'm a bit concerned about swarf and suds affecting the scales on the lathe.

Looks like you too have a fetish for DRO's.
 
But I see you haven't taken the final step of one on your tailstock. I fitted one to mine a couple of years ago and during the time since, I noticed a few problems with it.
 
So I redid it a while back, and it is perfect. Spot on depth holes every time, allowing you to put things like cross holes much closer etc. because you can rely on how deep you have actually drilled. It makes life so much easier.

John S, yes thats the one, it was at ME Exhib as well. There is a magnetic "ball counting" read head buried totally within the main body and the scale is fixed to the movable part, actually screwed attached to the brass bearing block on the end.
 
Bogs, to be honest I have never found a need to be more accurate than the calibrated feed on the tailstock handwheel, when I do it seems always a job I do on the mill. I do have a readout on the quill of my normal drilling machine!
 
John C, yes the saddle lock is on the front, there is a clamp plate inside the apron which clamps the front shear, more logical to me, on the front where the action is,  close to hand without reaching across the lathe and also frees up the rear for attaching read heads etc.
