Hi does anyone know where I can purchase a Quick Change Tool Post for a Clarke CL500M lathe? The swing under bed is 305 mm and the distance from bed to centre is 150mm. no websites I've visited as yet, have used the swing under bed as a measurement to help with sizing a post. Any help will be appreciated thankyou.

The size you need to be looking at is from the top of the topslide to spindle height which is not that great so you will need a fairly small QCTP

250-100 qctp will do the job

Hi John, just curious but is 250-100, in mm? And is it 100-250mm from the top of the cross slide to the lathe centre (tool post centre)? That kind of makes sense to me, although I've googled 250-000 and the tool holder inserts are 250-001, and there's 250-101 etc, that sort of throws my centre height idea off kilter

250-100 designation is for BXA sized toolposts.

clipped from post elsewhere :-

The "A", "B", etc. type designation is Aloris sizing. Yuasa, Phase II, etc. use 100, 200, etc.

AXA = piston type = size 100 (2 1/2" wide, 14mm dia t-nut) = 1/2" tool bit, 3/4" boring bar = model 250-100 .

AX = wedge type version in size 100 = model 250-111

BXA = piston type = size 200 (3" wide, 16mm t-nut) = 5/8" tool bit, 1" boring bar = model 250-200

BX = wedge version of size 200 = 250-222

IHTH

regards

This gives the sizes for the 250-100 the H minimum does not really want to be any more than the thickness of teh lower part of the standard 4-way tool post

I can't add anything to the posts above, but I've used this qctp for years on my Clarke lathe - it's more or less a straight swop. The tool holders sit quite low to get tool height on centre (with 10 or 12 mm tool shanks).

Nobody will use the swing over the bed as a measure for a QCTP as it is generally mounted on the compound slide.

As much as I agree with Arceurotrade as a good suggestion (JB’s link?) for purchasing (my favoured supplier, btw) I would not be recommending a set - unless you intend using all the holders.

I bought a set a few moons ago and wished I hadn’t. One holder has been modified and another does not get used (the unused one is the parting-off tool holder which requires resetting every time the ‘stick-out’ is changed!). Initially it seriously annoyed me, then I changed to an alternative QCTP each time I parted off. I bought a lathe with a rear tool post for parting off - and now never use anything else. I don’t like the ‘push type of knurler - I prefer the scissor-action version. Just my preference on that one.

I would still suggest Arc as a good, reliable supplier. I have no complaints at all of their service. Second to none as far as I am concerned.

I have not bought a QCTP, although thought about it.

Not all the holders in a set would be need, anyway, like NDIY.

But extra holdersm would be needed.

One of the reasons for not going to QCTP is that, in a small congested shop, storage of all the spare holders becomes an issue.

Howard Missed that typo!

"Dont use all holders in the set". Sounds like a rather familiar marketing ploy - "buy the set." Boxes of BA(and others) taps and dies complete with tap wrench and die stock. Half the set never get used and the wrench and stock duplicate what you already possess. That sort of caper is repeated in screwdrivers, hammers, different types of spanners, Allen keys and so on, list is endless. Now expanded to so called need for Metric versions. Goes back to the days of Robertsons jam and marmalade jars containing printed paper pix of negroes holding cricket bat, football, etc and they could be exchanged for a metal pin badge version. All sorts of pix on Kelloggs cornflakes pots, again, 'collect the set.' Puts poster power on parents to keep buying the brand. El cheapo buying, buy just what you assess a need for and invest extra dosh in better quality items. Just remember, GB is also known as "Treasure Island" for businesses.

Probably "All the holders in the set" is aimed at the beginner who does not have the extras.

And the extras might "Come in useful one day"

Once when we did not have any Taps and Dies, we lacked the means of driving them, but it was only later that we found that there were a dozen Tap Wrenches and Die holders in the workshop!

When did I last need a M9 tapping? (If ever! )

Steampunkedd,

I have a small QCTP that I bought for my Boxford but its too small. It is a simple clamp type and has two tool holders but its not a difficult design to copy to make more. Give me a shout if your interested and I can give you some sizes to see if it would fit your machine.

Martin
