My mobile has "gained" an extra synbol

As the title says, my mobile has "gained" an extra symbol, icon, whatever, and I don't know how to get rid of it. So any ideas will be welcome.

The 'phone is a Nokia Model: 2330c-2, Type: RM-512 so is quite old. It was given to me by my daughter, and was, I think, originally locked to the Orange network but was unlocked before I received it. I have been running it satisfactorily on O2 for at least 10 years having inserted my existing O2 SIM card, and hence ported my existing O2 number.

The 'phone is essentially for emergency use only, and although I always take it with me when I go out, it is usually switched off. Ok, that begs the question of why bother having one, but that's a whole other discussion point.

Recently, ie 2 or 3 days ago, a message popped up from Orange, I think, something about a message for me and to call a specific number, 123 perhaps. Being Orange, and having nothing to do with them, I ignored it, but now I have a symbol/icon looking like a tape recorder (two circles joined by a horizontal line) on the top line of the display. I have tried calling 123 but ended up with the Speaking Clock.

So, how can I get rid of this symbol?

Usually that tape recorder symbol means "you have a new voice mail". So to get rid of it you need to acknowledge or delete it or ring your voice mail number and listen to it etc.

Quaint they still use the tape recorder symbol for something that is stored digitally in a chip on a server someplace on the interweb in hyperspace. Bit like the steam train silhouettes on railway crossing signs 70 years after the last one ran.

The symbol probably means that you have a message left on the phone by a caller, how you get access to the recorded message I am unable to help with as I am not familiar with Nokia phones, but someone will be along soon and will be able to help I have no doubt. Dave W

It's a voicemail left on the VM server in O2's network, not on the phone. On O2 you access voicemail by dialling 901.

Thankyou John, that's got rid of it. So nothing to do with Orange then. Seemingly it was a message left by my wife, no idea why! Unless, the system was telling me that it was left by an Orange customer - which she is, or was since I believe they've been taken over by EE.

Orange rebranded as EE which was then acquired by BT.

But once your phone was unlocked and you inserted an O2 SIM it had no connection whatever with Orange.

I suggest you try and rediscover the "123" number you mentioned.
My voicemail is recovered by dialing 222. Different numbers are used by the various service providers.

The rebranding I knew about from having to sort out my wife's 'phone. I was only dimly aware about the BT connection.

But once your phone was unlocked and you inserted an O2 SIM it had no connection whatever with Orange.

Which is what I thought, but couldn't see any other reason due to not knowing about the voicemail facility.

There is always the possibility that I got it mixed up with something else. Or even imagined it! TBH, I couldn't care less about voicemail - if people want to talk to me, then they should be using the landline - I purposely do not give out the mobile number. Quite what "herself" thought she was doing I don't know - I haven't yet discussed it with her.

Rather cynically, I learned to ignore telephones about 60 or so years ago for the simple reason that although I worked for what was then the Post Office Telephones division of the GPO, answering someone elses 'phone usually resulted in ending up being involved in something I knew nothing about. And from what I remember, I wasn't the only telephone technician doing that, so much so that many years later we were instructed that we must answer other peoples 'phones if they were away from their desk. And to make matters worse, if it was a customer, we were ordered to take responsibility for sorting out their problem. The end result is that I can quite happily ignore things like voicemail, 'phone calls where the number is withheld, calls from unknown numbers etc. This does lead to problems of course, eg this morning, we received a call from, as it turned out, one of my chemotherapy nurses. It came up as "Number withheld" so I ignored it. My wife answered it just in case because she does have a friend who hides her number, and consequently had to hand it to me. Anyway, for me, unless I'm expecting a call, I ignore the 'phone.

Doesn't say much for me that, does it?

Sometimes phone buttons get pressed by accident and the user doesn't know it's happened - my son calls these 'pocket calls'. The receiving phone goes to voicemail when unanswered, but all that's recorded is random sounds until the voicemail times out or the call gets ended by other unintended presses. You should be able to see when the message was left, and that might help figure out why.

I still use my Nokia 1100, at least until 3G gets shut down next year, the phone is pre colour screens and if you look at the 1 key, there is the tape recorder symbol. The 2330 is likely to have the same keyboard layout. I currently have the symbol on my screen, and it will remain there until I press the 1 key and dial. Then the message will repeat and afterwards the options come up. Option 3 is to delete, the only way to get rid of it. I know exactly what the message is and still have to go through the proceedure to clear the screen.

Wife can't remember, but as we were on holiday at the time, anything might have happened. Maybe a "pocket call" indeed, although I doubt it because a) knowing her she might well have been wanting to tell me she'd bought sarnies; and b) she doesn't keep it in a pocket. So I'm inclined to think perhaps a bit of confusion by perhaps mistaking it for our landline which does indeed have an answering machine on it.

Well I never. You are quite correct, I do indeed have the symbol on Key 1! And yes, I did have to use option 3 to delete the mesage.

Do be a little carefull with voicemails on SMS. The FluBot is transferred that way, generally connected with a fake FedEx message and designed to harvest personal information on Android phones.

Updating to the latest software is the best way of protecting yourself. That and deleting without opening anything form a sender you dont recognise.

Hi, I've just looked at my old Nokia 6310 and that has the symbol on the No.1 key, I do remember seeing when the phone was in use, but never paid any attention to it and I can't recall ever getting voice mails anyway, there again they may not have been available on the PAYG sim card that I had.
