27 forum posts | Evening all,i am an absolutely brand new beginner to the model engineering world and keen to hopefully learn new things/tips tricks and advice along the journery i have planned... I come from an engineering background, currently work as a structural steel fabricator/welder but have experience with alot of smaller gauge fab on sheet metal/tubes/handrails etc Did a fair bit of punching, pressing, milling and turning whilst doing this line of work but will be a few years since now.Certainly no experience with model engineering however! So what brings me here? well i happened upon some videos on auto play on youtube one night after a few beers and it brought me to model steam engines,i have always liked anything like that, but never pursued it as a hobby, spending a lot of time messing around with cars,Land Rovers and motorbikes. So my plans-i am literally starting out with very little,i have a few engineering tools which ive gathered over the years inc mic's,verniers, squares mig welder, grinder etc but other than that i have nothing and nowhere to currently do anything! I shall be constructing a small workshop at home hopefully by summer, nothing flash by any means but something realistic for the space and budget! Upon the way i hope to gather the information, advice, machines and tools i need to make a model steam engine kit later on. anyway enough rabble for now! |

893 forum posts | North Yorkshire covers a big area, which is your nearest town ? I'm a member of PEEMS based in Pickering, York has a club and if are interested in railways then a visit to Gilling not far from Malton is worth a visit when they are open once again. Perhaps you may like to send me a PM. John |

![]() 1078 forum posts | Welcome Andy, I've had a few similar hobbies but none as satisfying as model engineering. I'm not very good but that doesn't affect my enjoyment! Stuart kits are a nice starting point but even better making a simple oscillating engine from bar stock. |

27 forum posts | Many thanks for the welcomes.Im based just outside Scarborough ,I shall have a look at links and the other suggestions, thanks. The first thing I need to do is get the workshop built and then gather up some machines etc.Whilst waiting for better weather and longer days I shall continue to read and watch videos to gain a better understanding of things. |
