Internet Speed ?

Is anyone else having problems today with internet speed, I have been trying to place an order on the College Engineering website for some materials but it is so slow, in frustration I nearly launched my IPad across the room but managed to restrain myself. I know it’s not the best site to go on but today it seems impossible to negotiate. Dave W

College Engineering is working for me, but it is markedly slow. Might be a local to them internet problem, the forum is OK at the moment after some sluggishness yesterday.

Tried CE and is slow for me also.

My internet ok though.

The CE website in its current incarnation is really struggling. It doesn't work at all on Firefox (for me at least) and only grudgingly on Chrome. I wouldn't attempt to order from it as it stands - if I needed something only they carry I'd ring them for it!

in my rural area,i have been without BT emails since last friday,got something back this morning,my broadband never reaches more than 1 usually its about zero to .7 OpenReach have just put in some new poles down our rd as there are some new hoses being built,mainly farmers converting any old tin shed and the rules now state that new residentual development has to have fibre line broadband installed,then a cable was fitted but the linesmen said that it could be many months before its up and working,

Living in a rural area I can appreciate you woes. At best my broadband speed is 1.8 and mobile signal very hit and miss. Recent activity by Open Reach means we may get fibre within 5 years. So many websites now use two factor authentication we are really missing out on the city dwellers "Normal" life.

I abandoned my attempt to place an order with College Engineering, ordered what I needed from Noggin End Metals, not the first time that I have had problems with the College website, hopefully they will be able to sort out why it’s always slow to operate, Dave W

I have always found it a very unresponsive website. I never understood why they haven't made efforts to get it sorted, bit annoying at times to the point where I have given up and ordered from elsewhere in the end.

I've got fast broadband that works well, so not an issue my end,

I feel quite pleased with my connection now, seeing the abysmal speeds that some are getting. Just checked this morning and I am getting - 69.1Mb/s Up and 18.4Mb/s Down - that's on FTTC and my PC is on a WiFi link, so probably a bit faster at the router. I notice that near me in parts of Slough they (not sure who) are installing FTTP but that's not due here for a couple of years, wrong side of the Berks/Bucks border apparently.

Commiserations to those with tediously slow connections, it really is unhelpful these days as more and more services become available on line and increasingly difficult to do by phone or snail mail.

I idly checked the CE website just now (from Ontario Canada). Browsed around a bit and it seemed perfectly fine to me. Rather zippy in fact given the lack of pop-ups. (I do use an ad blocker if that makes a difference). Nice site actually.

If others are still finding it slow, perhaps it's a local problem?

We live in a rural area in Somerset and up until a year ago had to make do with BT slow band (8mbps if lucky) in our area Truespeed began digging up roads in earnest in lots of villages, we now get nearly 80mbps having subscribed to the Truespeed lowest package.

Contracts are fixed price for the duration compared to BT 'contracts' which puts the price up mid contract if they feel like it.

69Mb/s download impressive ? That doesn't say much about the state of UK internet connections.

I had not realised how fortunate I am to have access to Virgin cable - I have just run the Ookla speed test & tonight I have 386Mb/s download & 37 Mb/s upload - a bit up on the 350 Mb/s package I have. Whenever I have checked the speeds, I have always seen more than the package stated speed.

This isn't Virgin's fastest package either - over 500 Mb/s is available & I had a flyer through the door this evening for Vodaphone cable also offereing a fibre 500 Mb/s service (pavements dug up twice for competing cable providers !).

I can't recall how long I have had fibre broadband - it was NTL World (at 600Kb/s) when I started & I see that Virgin took over NTL World in 2006, so getting on for 20 years now. I have never though of Huddersfield as being at the forefront of technology !

Virgin media offer 1Gig everywhere now and are trialing 2Gig. Some of us remember being blown away when we could get 5 Meg though most servers could only deliver 3.5Meg. Our office of 200 people ran on a 200k link in 1999 which did suffer a bit when the boss's secretary found she could stream 128k audio and look like she was listening to the dictaphone.

Meanwhile a few years ago my 5meg BT link dropped to 1meg during some bad weather - water in the old cables I was told and shouldn't expect more as the last house in the village.
Then I subscribed to the 'up to 50' offer in order to get unlimited download volume for working at home and magically my speed went up overnight to 35Meg on the same old wires.
