Warco 220

Hi everyone, I recently brought a new lathe a warco 220. Unfortunately it didn’t come with any change gears apart from a couple for the feed.

would anyone who owns one be willing to help me figure out if I’m missing any bits eg. Going from feed setup to screw cutting setup, is there any bushings etc I need to make up. If you could give me sizes etc of the parts I would be most grateful.

also with regards to the change gears would I be correct in believing they are module 1.5 with a 20 pitch.

I’m thinking I may buy some 1.5 spur gears and modify them to fit. Any suggestions?

Use the formula for calculating the MOD, using the (tooth count + 2) and diameter of the gear, to confirm, or otherwise, your belief.

I assume you mean mod 1.5mm, 20 degree pressure angle?

Ive not seen MOD expressed in mm before, generally just a number eg 1, 1.5, 2, etc which once multiplied by pi will give the circular pitch in mm.

20pa would be most likely.

Divide the OD by number of teeth +2 to get the MOD

Hi Sam, this chart shows all the change gears that came with the lathe I have Selection Chart there is a little info about the machine Mashstroy there are some oddments of info in my Warco 220 album I may be able to have a look at my change gears later or in the next day or two.

There is something odd, which frankly I haven't looked into so don't understand it, in that the two largest gears, I think it's the two largest, are stamped with a different number compared to the others. Unfortunately, they are on the machine and this morning is the coldest yet this winter! Brrrrr....

Have you got the so-called manual that goes with the lathe? If not, then I have a copy of the original pink handbook stored on my computer complete with their version of English! It's no big deal to email it to you if you wish. I've also got a copy that Nick Farr sent me: this version being done by Warco (I presume) and is in better English and printing. I'm sure Nick won't mind me saying this.

I've also got photos, drawings, info, about some of the bits & pieces of the lathe - unlike Nick, I haven't got an album, so if you want something, ask, and if I've done it, then it's yours for the price of an email.

Pitch diameter = #teeth x mod in mm. So the units of mod are mm. Normally they aren't included as "mod" is assumed to be a metric system of gear definition, but I wanted to be clear since the OP said a 20 pitch. I am assuming that a pitch of 20 DP is not intended! Also it would have to have units of mm to give the circular pitch when multiplied by pi.

John, agree the answer is metric but I've never seen it written as Mod#mm. Much the same way as we don't write 32DP" or 32DP inches but all the calcs using the DP give an answer in inches.

DP would be in 1/inch in units as it is a number (no units) divided by a length (diameter, in inch units).

I suppose if one looks up the definition of DP (from a proper text), it will define the result of the calculation as the numerical DP, not including units. Same with metric gear MODs. They likely neither include units as they are derived specifically from mm or inches, so are specific to the particular system.

If it really a new machine, the supplier should supply any gears that are missing, since it has been short shipped.

If it "New" to you, but used,, this may help.

Being a recent machine, the gears are very likely to Module and 20 degrees Pressure Angle.

OD in mm / (Tooth Count + 2 ) = Module

So a 1.25 Module gear with 60 Teeth would be 77.5 mm OD.

Once you have found which gears are missing, you could ask WARCO if they can supply.

It is possible that gears from a later machine would have the same Module, width, bore and keyway.

Hi Howard, the Warco 220 is an old lathe, I bought mine second hand way back in about 2005 and they were not in Warco's 2002 catalogue, so there's no guarantee that they will have any spares now for them, Sam could always ask of course.

When you swap over from turning to screw cutting I understand that you need a short tee nut and also a bush, would you mind giving me the sizes of these components? A picture of the setup in screw cutting mode would be really helpful.

Ive brought some off the shelf gears that I’m modifying to fit.

May I suggest that you use the private messaging system to send me your (or a suitable) email address. The reason is that I have, so far, turned up two photos which I believe are what you may be asking for, a word document I did some time ago on fine feed and a set of drawings which I did some years ago when I managed to break the triple pulley block on the finefeed mechanism. This drawing shows, I think, all the parts that you are asking for. It will have to be a pdf, unless you can read drawings from Design Cad Pro! Also, the measurements will be as I measured them, and I rather think that there is space for rationalisation, eg, a dimension of 4.06mm is probably meant to be 4.00mm. At least, if I was designing from scratch, I would be very unlikely to use such odd dimensions.

All in all, a lot of stuff to put on the ME/MEW forum - not for any reasons of secrecy, just the practicalities.
