A while back I upgraded to Win 10, very disappointing. basically it has completely messed up the loading of digital pics.

I want to go back to Win 7. what are the pros and cons. The machine is a PC.

If you do go back the way always get the pro version

Always used the pro ones, currently on win 7 pro 64bit, all updates disabled for about 4 years so far

W7 is no longer supported. m Although from time to time, when shutting down, updates still come in.

Still works quite well, (installed in march 2017 ) and shall continue using it

It ain't broke so no intention to fix it; plus various adverse comments re W10 mean an up grade id even less likely.

Better the devil you know and all that

+1 to what Howard said.

I have one installation of Win-7 and one of Win8.1 (despite some people professing to love Win-7 and hate Win8x, the latter is really only Win7 with minor updates and that admittedly 'orrible shell .... which can easily be dealt with).

Tried Win10 and didn't like it. Besides which, as I understand it, at least in the Home edition, you have no choice about updates. If MS so decrees, you get updates. I like to choose mine, particularly with some updates (if you read the docs) containing residual bugs. (One update a while back said there was a "possibility" that the network card drivers would need to be re-installed and any network reconfigured if you installed that update! I didn't install it and have never noticed the loss).

The thing you will likely find as time goes on is that new apps and hardware will not have drivers for earlier Windows versions such as Win7/8.

What problems are you having with digital pics?
It might be better to address that, rather than reverting to an older operating system.

peak 4, basically it will not load all the pics in the camera, I get 4 or 5 and the presentation gives me a headache as i cannot for instance take a pic. to put in my ME archive. Yet, with win 7 it was all so easy.

Wonder when the Gates organisation are going to realise than the golden goose is getting close to expiring? Seems that when they get to achieving a reasonably stable platform we get a disruption with yet another O/S together with all the update saga. Now not only a new O/S but you need a new compuwker to run it. Sorry Bill, the goose tasted luverly and I converted its eggs to Britannias

Regards Ian.

Clive, I'm not quite sure what's going wrong here.
Are you downloading direct from the camera, or from your memory card?
I normally use the SD card in a reader on the PC and don't have any issues; I have a folder for all 2021 photos, and sub folders for each day, titled with the date and contents. e.g. yesterday's folder is "2021-09-06 Old Moor"
I then just copy and paste the camera's memory card contents into the folder.
600+ transferred yesterday with no issues.
After launching my processing software (DxO Optics) I just point it at the new folder.

It's been said before - countless times. Regain control of your PC: install Linux.

If you must retain Windoesn't, you can install Linux so your machine can boot into either operating system.

Worth investigating as Bill suggests before going to the painful bother of reverting to Windows 7. As Windows 10 is supposed to handle pictures OK, and most owners are happy it does, I suspect Clive's problem is a mismatch of some sort between his older camera and it's Windows 10 driver.

What's the make and model of the camera? We can check if the manufacturer has updated W10 drivers for it. Also, it sounds as if the photo manager is different, and needs changing. Possibly the camera's memory needs to be reformatted. Fingers crossed, it's an easy fix.

+1 for Windows 10. I have gone through most iterations of Windows and W10 is the best so far IMO. It's stable, versatile and user friendly. I regularly download images and video either direct from my camera and 'phone via USB or via the card reader built into the PC.

In either case Windows sees the device as external storage and files will transfer either way with no issues at all.

Linux, I've given it a whirl. It's limited and for geeks!nosmiley

I have no issues with Win10 either. I do have some older programs that will not run under Win10 but I have VMware to run a virtual XP machine for them (flat bed scanner for instance). I also sometimes use Hyper-V to run an XP virtual machine but file transfer between XP and Win10 is easier with VMware. VMware will save to a USB memory stick but Hyper-V will not, it has a higher level of security that prevents it from accessing USB ports. With Hyper-V I have to mount and unmount virtual hard or floppy drives to transfer files.

Possibly not, according to Hosting Tribunal:-

  • In 2021, the lines of code submitted to the Linux Git repository reached 27.8 million.
  • In 2021, 100% of the world’s top 500 supercomputers run on Linux.
  • Out of the top 25 websites in the world, only 2 aren’t using Linux.
  • 96.3% of the world’s top 1 million servers run on Linux.
  • 90% of all cloud infrastructure operates on Linux and practically all the best cloud hosts use it.

Other statistics probably exist but even if half true that's more than a few geeks (me included) wink

I'm afraid so much FUD (fear, uncertainty + doubt) has been spread by M/S that many actually buy into it - even our Editor.

Possibly in the distant past it was true that Linux required greater knowledge and of course many with that knowledge moved once they could escape from proprietary packages and lockin but these days most Linux packages work straight out of the box and are even happy to share a machine with M/S (the reverse is however not the case) - I usually recommend Mint as the distribution very suitable for those moving from Windows but recently I've been moving my older machine to MXLinux (base is Debian 10) which has an excellent range of tools carefully chosen from the vast array and eg one being Wine fully integrated into the package - WINE allows easy running of those M/S programs that are 'essential' for the non-Linux users and cause much of the Lockin. I usually suggest they buy a cheap SSD memory eg CEX sell 128GB devices for around ?25 and swop out their hardrive (generally a trivial task) and install MXLinux from DVD or USB stick - many tutorials online.

Sorry John have to disagree moved to Linux mint March 2019 and find it very good, I use Thunderbird and Firefox without any problems but I will admit I have an old window 8 laptop which I use to maintain my clubs website as I just to lazy to move to new software. What I like most about Linux is that I turn it one and its ready to go no farting about checking for updates etc.

Perhaps that came out wrong! I was actually trying (obviously ineptly) to point out that Linux is a widely used, stable, user friendly OS. I've been using it for years. The only application I cannot get to run on it is Alibre due in no small part to MS insisting on using DirectX.

What was that - about half a day for this thread to be subverted to yet another Linux vs Windows peeing contest?

Yes, I was surprised to see some of these stats - which didn't line up with other info I'd seen with regard to Cloud market share...for instance:

"Combined, these SaaS vendors account for 51% of the worldwide SaaS cloud market share. Leading the way is Microsoft, with a 17% market share and impressive annual growth of 34%. Microsoft continues to gain market share, primarily due to its dominance in the high- growth collaboration segment."

Cloud Market Share

Just saying...

The camera is a Panasonic TZ3, it has given no problems until Win 10. As SOD says it may well be a driver problem.
