Sad News : John Wilding

Dear Fellow EHG Members,

I regret that we lost one of our two remaining founder members on Tuesday – the distinguished John Wilding MBE, aged 96. John is probably known to all of you through his series of books and articles on the construction of clocks, some in Meccano, many using traditional techniques, and often addressed to the beginner and the amateur. Very few people can have done as much as John to advance the cause of practical clockmaking. He had an interest in electric clocks, of course, and was there in 1970 when our group was founded. I would expect that a full obituary will appear in the June edition of Antiquarian Horology. Others will appear earlier in Model Engineer and the Horological Journal. Our thoughts are with Joyce, his widow, and their family.

Condolences to John's family. It is always a major blow to a community when one of it's pioneers and most knowledgable members passes. It is good that many of his skills have been saved in his books.

Very sad news, my first clock was one of his designs and works very well.

That's sad news. John Wilding did an enormous amout of good for amateur clockmaking with his clearly explained 'how to' books. John may be no longer be with us but there are many of the clocks he inspired gently ticking away on walls and shelves bring that pleasent lived in sound to our homes. He lives on in his writings and in the timekeepers he inspired us to make.

Met the man many many years ago at ME exhibition having a conversation between himself and the late, great G.H. Thomas over a cuppa. Just think of the accumulated knowledge between them that has been lost.

Very sad news, I never met him but to be in on conversation with him and GHT over a cuppa....wow....

He left behind some great books and construction articles, thanks John.

Very sad but at least most of his know how is in print

I'm nearing the completion of his Castle Clock at the moment. I have also got some of his writings on clock repair methods which I have found useful on several occasions. I think the last time I spoke with him was at a open day at the Nottigham Myford factory.
