Hello,

My name is Boris. I'm from Sydney Australia and enjoy using my lathe to repair antique English fly reels.

I'm trying to find some brass machine screws for a reel. As far as I can tell the screws are BSW fine 48tpi with a major diameter of 7/64"

I'm also interested where I can find a die and tap in this size.

If anyone knows where and how I can get the screws and tools I'd be appreciative.

Cheers

Greetings, Boris

With luck on your side, I think you might find that’s a 6 BA thread.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the greeting, and your optimism. After contacting Classic Fasteners in South Australia, whom I was certain they'd have what I was looking since they have the 7/64 listed in their British Whitworth list.

They didn't have the 7/64 in stock and don't where to get them but they did offer me the 6 BA, which on paper, looks like it'd do the job. When I got them I checked their major dimensions and they are smaller than their listed dimensions which makes them unsuitable.

The 6 BA is listed as .1102 but the screws came to me at .1050 this makes them a little loose.

I'm starting to think 4G UNF might be worth a try. But is this used on old British machine tools?

When you say "old", what date do you think they may be. The UNF/UNC started to arrive in Britain in about 1950, mainly in the auto and aero industries. I would have thought that fishing reels would not have been "Early Adopters" of new threads.

This is where the old two part dies come in handy as a 48tpi one can cover a small range of sizes so you could get away with opening up a 3/32" x 48 die without too many issues with helix angles.

I've added fishing reel to the title as there are a couple of members interested in them that may otherwise pass over the thread.

I've just measured on of my 6BA screws and the OD is 0.108", so only 2 thou under nominal. But my screw was bought from EKP (in the UK) so it's a cut thread, not rolled like most commercial screws. So I'd bet it's 6BA.

EKP have the appropriate machinery to cut threads themselves. Think there was an article in ME(?) sometime ago about EKP and their machinery.

Just googled "7/32 x 48 tpi" and first item on flebay is what the OP wants, priced at AUD $19.9, seller, "C, Australia" so suspect that's "Classic Fasteners" mentioned above.

Boris over the last 40 years or so i have fixed lots of British made reels, mainly fly reels and mostly the threads are Whitworth or BA a lot of 1/8 & 5/32 Whit but i have never come across 7/64 Whit. What makes of reels are you working on ? Hardy in particular use Whitworth threads for most of their screws on vintage reels & some are left hand.

I believe these reels are from the early 30's thanks for the link though, it's interesting reading.

The hard thing is determining the thread angle on such a small fastener - that will tell you if it is UNF or BA for sure .

I would try a 4-48 screw and see if it fits , if it screws in and is a better fit than the BA screw then run with that .

You can buy some BA size fasteners through E&J Winter out at Bathurst along with taps and dies (Ben is pretty good to deal with )

You could also could try Model engineering supplies in Victoria ( never used them )

If you want taps and dies try LPR toolmakers they have a good range of carbon steel and HSS taps and dies and i can attest that they are decent quality and nice and sharp !
They all do internet sales and postal delivery
If you are having trouble getting 4-48 screws try Nepean boltmaster or if you are really really desperate blackwoods - although man will probably be living on the moon before you get your screws if they have to order them !

Hi John,

These are JW Youngs and I'm pretty sure they are pre-war reels pattern 1A etc .If I can work out how to post photos from my computer I'll show you the reels I'm talking about.

My thread gauge shows 48 tpi WW and the calipers show .1120 or 7/64

Ian,

those are good ideas and great contacts. I've tried doing internet searches and I'd have never found those businesses.

Thanks

Long term I'd really like to have those taps & dies as I have a few reels that need a bit of repair so making a few longer bits - check adjustments with threads etc.

Just for a bit diversional therapy here's another JW Young reel with a broken agate I repaired.

20190505_173902.jpg

It was badly cracked and sharp enough to damage my fly line so I replaced it. Here is the nickel silver bezel in the collet cleaned up with a new agate set into the bezel.

20190511_142956.jpg

Here it is ready to be fitted

Brass rivet turned

Finally fitted ready to take a line. It'd be just fine on one of my 3 wt bamboo rods.

Here's one of my 3wt rods for very small delicate streams and trout.

Now it's my turn to browse some of the work you blokes have done as my diversional therapy.

I bought the agate, I only put it into the bezel and fitted it onto the reel.
