Hello

I have been unable to get hold of a copy of Model Engineers Workshop 2008 Autumn special edition which included an interview with Cherry Hill on setting up a workshop.

I have kept an eye out on ebay for some time with no luck and unfortunately cant find it in the online archive.

If anyone has a spare copy I could purchase, I would be very grateful.

I would also be interested in finding the dvd from 2009 where Ivan Law interviews Cherry Hill and Mike Sayers at the Sandown exhibition.

Any help is much appreciated,

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

I don't think it was an 'autumn special' - these are ordinary issues we produce in a 13-issue year, and I we were still on 12 issues a year in 2008, and there's no gap in the issue numbering. It would also appear in the archive and it doesn't. The old indexes don't mention any such interview.

There was a 'reader's workshops' special in 2009 (link to section by Harold Hall) that he contributed to, thsi was produced by my predecessor, David Clarke. It doesn't mention Cherry on the cover. It's possible there was a profile of her workshop inside, but it claims to profile twelve workshops and names their owners and she isn't on the list.

I produced a 'setting up a workshop' special for MyTimeMedia in 2016, but that didn't contain an interview with Cherry either.

I can only find a mention of it here: www.workshopshed.com/2008/11/miniature-engineering/. I suspect the author of that page is confusing the special with an interview somewhere else. perhaps someone who has a copy of the 2009 special could confirm if it contains such an article.

Note this special was never produced as a digital edition.

Neil

The Special Edition 'Setting up a Workshop' to which you refer was dated Autumn 2008 and had a picture of the good lady on the cover along with a corner of her workshop. She was interviewed by Geoff Sheppard over nine pages. The edition was marked as 'Exclusive to W.H. Smith. I kept it for inspiration .

Is there any news of Mrs. Hill?

Hi,Watford has beaten me to it, just found my copy of it and I remember it well. maybe because it was a W. H. Smith exclusive, that it doesn't show up in the archives.

Regards Nick.

Thank you for your replies.

Thanks Bill, I do have a copy of that article in model engineer you found on ebay, it's a great read.

That's the one Jason, unfortunately the DVD isn't available from that link any more.

Mike has kindly offered to email me a scan of the article in his copy. Should someone still have spare copy the wish to part with, it would still be nice to have an original copy of the magazine.

Many thanks,

Stephen

Crikey, I can find no records of that at all!

I wonder what other 'specials' are lost to history.

I've asked the company if we still have any of the content of these archived. It may be possible to reprint the interview with Cherry in MEW, for example.

Thanks Nick,

We have tracked down some files for the 2008 one, and I've just been asked for more details of the 2009 one - which you have supplied!

I'll see whether there's anything we can use that will be of interest.

Also, don't forget the wonderful 2014 publication "Cherry's Model Engines" by David Carpenter which describes her workshop methods and models. Not sure if it's still in print but the ISBN number is 978-0-7198-1421-1.

Unfortunately, I am STILL unable to upload photographs to this forum for some totally unknown reason, otherwise would be sharing a few brilliant pictures from the book!! My copy has 148 pages of extremely high quality illustrations and cost £30. Worth every penny!
