Thread: Pressure Gauge Dead Weight Tester
27/08/2022 20:35:24

Hi John

I wonder if it might be worth searching under the name Roy Amesbury. I believe he wrote an article in ME on the construction of pressure gauges in the mid 70s, perhaps he talks about dead weight testing?

I just has a look through the kozo books. The imperial one is described in the Heisler book and the metric in the Climax book.

Very good news,

Stephen

I have received a scan of Mikes copy of the interview with Cherry. I really appreciate him taking the time to this.

Also Ian J has generously sent me his copy in the post, for which i am very grateful.

Would be brilliant to have these republished,

Thanks Barry, it is an excellent book.

Thanks Jason, an excellent book isn't it.

Thank you for your replies.

Thanks Bill, I do have a copy of that article in model engineer you found on ebay, it's a great read.

That's the one Jason, unfortunately the DVD isn't available from that link any more.

Mike has kindly offered to email me a scan of the article in his copy. Should someone still have spare copy the wish to part with, it would still be nice to have an original copy of the magazine.

Many thanks,

Stephen

Hello

I have been unable to get hold of a copy of Model Engineers Workshop 2008 Autumn special edition which included an interview with Cherry Hill on setting up a workshop.

I have kept an eye out on ebay for some time with no luck and unfortunately cant find it in the online archive.

If anyone has a spare copy I could purchase, I would be very grateful.

I would also be interested in finding the dvd from 2009 where Ivan Law interviews Cherry Hill and Mike Sayers at the Sandown exhibition.

Any help is much appreciated,

Stephen

Thread: Fool rushing in

Hi David, I believe the great wheel is somewhere around 8 1/2" to 8 3/4" in diameter. I believe it has 290 teeth. Hope that's of some help, Stephen

Thread: Tailstock height
04/03/2016 14:43:03

Thank you Jim

I believe the reason for the tailstock to be higher rather than lower is because of the reason Neil gives and to allow for bed and tailstock base plate wear. Thinking back to when i checked my Myford, the tailstock was between 1.5 - 2 thou higher. Is this an acceptable amount?

I checked it by using the test bar between centers and clocking the highest point of the bar at each end, measuring the difference. As John said, you must use the cross slide rather than just running along the top.

Many thanks for your comments, i have often wondered what is an acceptable amount.

Does anyone know the correct amount that a myford tailstock should be higher by? Im'e thinking of myfords original spec tolerances.

Hi Ryan

thank you for the link, looks to be a useful site, i think i am inclined to agree with Julian and copy as per the most recent drawings as they must have been changed for a reason.

Julian, thank you for your helpful advice, the combination lever has actually been lengthened by 8 thou rather than shortened could you please explain the reason for this? how would it effect the valve events? interesting that the smaller centers have been shortened by a thou or is this insignificant? unfortunatly i have already made it a while back but only bought the large drawings recently. only myself to blame!

many thanks

Stephen

Please see below photos of the drawings which differ from the book, i purchased them from my hobbies store and i belief they are the same supplied by reeves.

Apologies Ryan for cluttering up your build diary but i am sure it may be of help to us all to make sure we are using the correct dimentions. your diary has been very usefull and interesting by the way

many thanks

Hello all

I wonder if you can help me with a query on tiches valve gear, i have notised that some measurements are different in the book to the drawing. firstly the return crank centres are 11/16 in the book and 39/64 on the drawings giving i think 5/64 difference. secondly the combination lever (vertical rod) shows on the drawings to be 8 thou longer between centres with writing saying it has 10 thou lead (this is the two lower hole distances). If i have not explained it well, please say and i could take some pictures of the relivent drawings.

Does anyone know which we should be following?

Your help would be much appreciated

many thanks

Stephen

Thread: Quality of drills
22/04/2014 19:45:50

I was just wondering if any of you have had good or bad experience with the quality of drills and milling cutters suplied by Chronos as they look to be good value. Or would i regret it after. I have had bad experience with taps and dies from somewhere else.

Your advise is much appreciate

Kind regards

Stephen

Thread: Myford Super 7 Headstock Lubrication
29/12/2013 21:33:22

Hello Dave

I believe the front headstock bearing is whick fed and so due to a long time of storage, is it possible that it has disintigrated and needs replacing. I am probably wrong but sometimes when i lift the oiler cap the level sudenly drops a bit which i asume is because the air needs to get in to allow the oil to escape.

Hope this is off some help

Kind regards Stephen
