Is there a way to mask silver solder

hi out there is there a way to mask silver solder. I need to solder a bearing in place And to aline it I need to use a dumb axle. Is there a way to mask the axle from the solder. I don’t wish to end up with one solid lump. Thanks, michael

Try Tippex.

Tippex works quite well on exposed surfaces. Not sure how effective it would be on a shaft / hole though. Better approach might be to make the bush with an undersized bore and then line ream it in situ.

Carbon black? Or loctite it in position instead?

Tippex works for me though it must be the solvent based one. Pic below shows two shafts being used to keep things in place during soldering and you cab see the white tippex on the shafts

here two pins set into a piece of flat bar which hold the two bosses in position, all coated in tippex

Part came off the jig no problem

Rust can work or a nice coat of black scale on the dumb axle

The trade method used to be to rely on jeweller's rouge, just mixed with water and painted on. If Tippex is Titanium Dioxide there is not much difference, I suppose.

I don't think carbon-black would suit as it is readily oxidised in a flame to a gas.

nicrobraz I have a bottle the label is very faded all I can make out green stop off type 11 wall colmonoy ltd but had quick look on inteweb and the company is still going regard norm

NIcrobraz stop offs, manufactured by Wall Colmonoy, come in three flavours - white, red and green.

From memory, White stop off is Titanium Oxide based, Red is Calcium Carbonate based - can't recall what is used in green stop off. I could be wrong - it was a long time ago.

Stop offs came as a paint-on liquid and also as wax sticks.

I used to be the technical sales rep for Colmonoy forty years ago; The UK factory (they are an American company with head office in Detroit) is just two miles from me in Pontardawe and they are going strong.
