![]() 1688 forum posts 16 photos | To all those struggling with Microsoft PC’s and the various versions of Windows, if you fancy a change then Curry’s are currently offering 12 months interest free credit on all Mac Computers. I know they are expensive and Apple regulate the high price by not allowing any price cutting on their products but I took the plunge to Apple in 2011 and it was the best choice I ever made in computing, have never had any system problems since, it all runs sweet with none of the continual error screen messages that I used to get with Windows. Just a thought for all you frustrated Windows users, and no I have no connection with Curry’s or Apple, just a very happy customer. Dave W |

![]() 1078 forum posts | I've been on Mac a while and I agree they are expensive, but for me a computer is like a Washing Machine; I just want it to do whats asked. Windows I found tempermental, Linux too difficult to understand. Mac just works, and for a long time. I'm writing this on a ten year old Macbook that hasn't slowed down since I've bought it, with next to no maintenance. In my previous job I had four work laptops in the space of five years, bloated and stodgy after not very much use at all. I'll keep using this macbook for as long as I can. Another happy customer.

![]() 1688 forum posts 16 photos | Another benefit of Macs is that when a new version of the operating system comes out you can automatically upgrade at no cost, the only penalty is that it sometimes slows things down because the programmes are that more complex, but you can always upgrade your memory which is what I do when necessary. ..., but you can always upgrade your memory which is what I do when necessary. Dave W You can't upgrade memory on an iMac, the back is stuck on. Come to that you can't upgrade anything unless you send it back to Apple! My iMac sits about doing very little apart from looking good. It won't run my CAD program (Alibre) and if I put Windows on it with Bootcamp it runs very slowly. Apart from that both the hardware and software are very antiquated, possibly to aid reliability. It essentially runs a fancy front end on top of Unix which is at least 30 years old. Good marketing and cult following just like Myford Oh yes did I mention the fancy Mac mouse with the touch sensitive top - masterpiece of design that makes the cursor flip all over the screen and you can't use it when it's charging as the port is on the underside! 3453 forum posts 23 photos | I had a Mac and a PC on my desk at work but used the Mac 95% of the time because it was a much nicer experience. In terms of cost, at work they kept Mac’s a lot longer than PC’s and they required far less support so commercially I’m not too sure there was a lot of difference long term due to the high cost of support salaries. We’ve had four Macs at home so you can guess what our next computer will be. Having said that I’m writing this on an iPad Pro 10.5. |

You can't upgrade memory on an iMac, the back is stuck on. John You can upgrade the memory on an iMac if you know what you’re doing. The back isn’t stuck on, the screen is held in place with magnets. It depends on the model though. Some had removable panels for RAM access. It’s probably best to just buy the machine with the right amount of RAM you need in the first place though. |

It's an iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, Late 2015) although I bought it late 2016. definitely no access panels the back is a one piece aluminium pressing. According to Apple this particular model is not memory upgradeable! John |

3453 forum posts 23 photos | If Apple say that then it’s probably soldered in. Not seen it before but it’s possible. IMacs are built from the back forwards, the screen is the last thing to go on. Apple don’t normally use pressings, it’s probably machined like their phones. |

![]() 1688 forum posts 16 photos | My IMac, 2011 vintage has a removable panel on the underside for access to 4 ram sockets, have upgraded mine twice since I purchased it. If in doubt whether you can upgrade your IMac go on the Mr Memory website and input the details of your model, including the year, and it will list any memory available for your model, even gives a demo video of how to do it on each model. Mr Memory website is very good and a mine of information, and no I have no connection with them other than very satisfied with their service and products. Dave W |

Android is great for phones, but I wouldn't want an android PC. I was being slightly tongue in cheek, but the market is moving away from laptops and workstations. Those smart phones really are smart. Integrated camera (still, cine & slow motion), phone, text, email, GPS, web, games, voice recognition, gestures, and apps galore. Permanently networked, zero boot time, fast multi-processor & graphics accelerators, SSD, bluetooth, portable and cheap. What's not to like? To answer Vic's question 'Others' is mainly Linux flavours (which is far more pervasive in embedded systems & servers than workstations), but there's still a lot of mainframe O/S & minicomputer O/S about plus real-time systems.
