Another use for the "Stevensons Collet Blocks"

Picking up edges with a coaxial indicator.

I have a touch-probe that fits my vertical head, but not the horizontal.

I have a coaxial indicator that fits both, but that's no good for picking up edges.

I had a brainwave at the weekend, and used the square "Stevensons Collet Blocks" from arc-eurotrade.

This turns out to be 40mm square with a nice ground and tapered hole. SO once the dial was running true I knew I was 20mm above the table and 20mm from the edge of the part being machined.

As a bonus, the fact that the bore is tapered means that the dial shows oval if you are out of square too.

The 'oval' test is a particularly nice bonus.

... Good thinking yes

Inspired thinking Andy, especially the rotational alignment indication.

I think John would have issued his expression 'job's a good un' in recognition.

Thank you for sharing it

Regards Brian

It is not often I learn something new. Thanks. BTW, this should work with a normal dial test indivator as well as the Blake.

Well done Andy.

Brilliant idea.

Will use this in future, since I have the sq. and hex blocks.

+1 Andy, great idea!

I've just got my ER40 Sq.+Hex set!

I've bought things in the past that I thought was going to be handy..... and it really just didn't fulfil that expectation.

The more I do and see people doing with the these blocks, the more I like it!

I've added a pair of 20-40-80 + 10-20-40 Stevenson’s blocks to my Xmas list as I've always fancied a set and they'll prove invaluable for a couple of checks I want to make on my lathe next year.
