Help please to reset a Mitutoyo 25mm digital mic. After replacing the battery all my attempts have failed to remove the flashing P (print) from the display.

Fitted a new battery, closed anvil to stop, pressed Origin once, pressed Origin for a second time. P still flashing.

If Origin button held down after about 8 seconds an E--o3 message is displayed. The same message is displayed if the Zero/ABS button is pressed.

I do not have original instructions but have followed procedure as described on the Mitutoyo site.

Any help appreciated. Emgee

Maybe you have seen this page already, but here's a good collection of manuals from Mitutoyo:

Yes Michael, got details as in my request from there but Search for the model number 293-795-30 gives nothing.

You say that you have closed the mic, should you not be using the calibration block to set the origin?

I've got a height gauge that has a nervous breakdown every time I change the battery.

I think it's because the gauge remembers previous settings for several minutes whilst the cell is being swapped over. If the volts are already too low when the change is made, the memory is garbled. That causes chaos when the gauge powers up on the new cell. For me the cure is to wait about 20 minutes after taking the old cell out before putting the new one in. I guess letting the gauge discharge completely before putting in a new battery forces a full reset, restoring sensible factory defaults.

May not solve your problem but easy enough to try.

If I remember right, the P isn't print it's to indicate that the origin has been lost. Remove battery, leave for a few minutes. Replace battery, display shows zero's and flashing P. Display shows zeros even if you move the thimble. Close anvil and spindle for true zero. Press origin (from memory, check instruction). Now flashing P is off, and display responds to thimble position.

If not it's sicky poorly

Looked all through the Mit catalogue and 293 is certainly part of the product family but the range does not appear to go up as far as the next 3 numbers ie 795. Do you have the numbers correct ? as it is easy to err on that. [ I've been there ] Also is it one of the "Digimatic " ones. as not all the Digital models are "Digimatic "

Just removed the battery from one of me Mit's [ 293331] once I set the origin the P will flash and as Phil mentioned press it [ Origin ] again and it will [ should ] vanish. Not sure about the E--03 code, Possibly a faulty battery.

Just tried putting in the number of my mit 25-50mm Digimatic [ 293331] and even it comes up with "no results " so it is obviously not a current model, looks like the same for Emgee's one.

One way to clear the confused memory of a caliper or micrometer is to briefly short the battery terminals, this is enough to discharge the on board capacitance and clear the memory.

P.S. ... The part number looks valid, albeit 'discontinued'

Thanks for all the tips, will try them one by one tomorrow, probably starting with shorting the battery compartment terminals out to discharge any voltage present.

Still no change, the Origin button now toggles the display between P flashing and the E--o5 mesage. (Not 03 as stated incorrectly earlier unless the fault has changed)

At rest and at frequent intervals the display momentarily shows 666.000 and not 0.000. (mm mode selected)

Does anyone know or have used an instrument repairer with a good outcome ?

E-05 makes more sense!

I dropped a Mitutoyo QuantuMike at work and got the same error. Tried all sorts of things, in the end the inspector had to strip it down. Turns out the encoder had shifted.

Just before you give up and start taking things to bits, I've seen the E-05 message cured by fitting a new battery. It's worth trying a new new battery

Error code E-05 is an overspeed error for Digimatic calipers The overspeed/ electrical noise error code for Digimatic mic's is E-oS.. Certainly would try a known good battery. Failing that, a call to Mitutoyo would be in order. I certainly would not attempt to take any of mine to pieces.

Hi Michael, thanks for the link, interesting reading but no access to the pictures, really sounds like it is past the use date unless an instrument repairer can be found. In the meantime back to the conventional mic !!!
