Do people want metric horizontal mill tooling?

I was poking around to see if anyone sold new, metric tooling for horizontal mills.

Found CR tools in england but they are not cheap, no doubt good and worth it if making things commercially but out of my price range.

Looking further afield I found someone in India who would do it much cheaper. Having to order them to be made as well as the shipping makes it much easier to buy 10 of something than 1 of something though.

Not looked at what import duty would be but I think it would end up being £40 for a 100x6x22mm cutter, £55 for 100x16x22 cutter. As a sorta reference point. Half of what UK sourced cutters would be.

If I bought a bunch, took the ones I wanted and then sold the excess on eBay or something similar would anyone buy some? Just wanted to know so I don't buy 10 life times worth of cutters all for myself.

Enjoy CE certifying them, as all responsible eBay sellers do....

I was at a Chinese supplier from whom my company purchased various items. I queried how long it would take to get a CE marking for the product, from a test houses in China.

No problem said he, half an hour later I was presented with samples, with full CE certification labels in place......Ho hum!

Yes, that very strange "certification" that nobody other than china seems to recognise as a legitimate qualification.

No Rainbows! You have to have the approved silver sticky label with black printing, showing the prominent CE mark!

It used to cost anywhere from £250 to £2000 to get various products through a test house in Europe. It usually took 4 or 5 weeks to get the approval. This was from a pretty fast and cheaper than most, test house in Copenhagen. At least I got a good meal on the waterfront!

Now how one wonders, can the Chinese do the testing so quickly and for zero cost?

Are you going to get some 22mm skinny wobbly arbors made too, else how do I fit the cutters on my nice old imperial mill?

on second thoughts at £40 a pop it had better include a free arbor, since I can get a £5 cutter from Home and Workshop a the next show.

Bayzle, if your arbor is 7/8", you could always take off that extra 0.225mm so that these cutters would fit .... but if you did that, it might mean your Imperal cutters would be a bit wobbly as well.

Rather childish to come out with vacuous, cynical chorus every time somebody says "CE".

You don't need to involve a test house unless you can't do the tests yourself. The CE mark is a declaration that the relevant tests (if any actually apply) have been passed - and you can come up with a meaningful, traceable test report if asked.

Not certain which tests are mandated by EU for horizontal milling cutters? Perhaps those with strong opinions have equally deep knowledge? Suspect not.....

I was referring to the real China Export logo, which happens to look extremely similar to the genuine and legitimate, C.E mark, which has a decent reputation, no argument there.

This is very strange because no other country other than china recognises this logo, nobody asks them to put it on there and to many, me included, it was an idea cooked up in the recent past to simply try and pass off goods as a "C.E" mark and hope nobody notices. They will obviously deny that.

If it was a genuine attempt to add some kind of traceability to their goods then why would they deliberately copy the C.E logo and only change it slightly so they can't be accused of fraud.

CE marking would not apply to milling cutters as they have no electrical or mechanical mechanisms in them. My brothers company was recently approached by a government supplier to ask if he could provide his products with CE marks, he tried to explain that his product is exempt from marking as it has no electrical or mechanical content, only to be told that he could not quote for the order unless he could CE mark the product! He checked up on it, and found he was correct, but the order went to someone willing to stamp CE (falsly) on the product. I have had many arguments on many forums along these lines, and as yet have heard nothing that convinces me that CE has any value or credence whatever. Please remember that the tumble driers and dishwashers that have been catching fire, and burning houses down, are CE marked . It means absolutely nothing, and is a totally wothless piece of Eurobull! Roll on the return of the BSI kitemark.

Got a big pile o cutters coming with the mill. Was just thinking of key ways and the sort where having a cutter dead on size might be easier than jiggling an under size imperial cutter around to make metric slots and also for radius or concave cutters where it has to be dead on size. Have been checking ebay but metric cutters seem to be rare.

Which suggests there is little demand for them from people buying on e-bay UK, there are quite a few that come up from Europe where hobbists will be more likely to use metric cutters and have machines with metric arbors.

Most home machinists here will be using old imperial machines so imperial arbors and making dated loco designs in imperial. Probable also got a tool grinder too so could grind down a £5 imperial one to metric width if needed and not need to make a new arbor.

Industry that will still be using them will not want ones to fit a light 22mm arbor a sthey have heavier machines which would have 27 or 32 arbors and they will just pick them up from MSC, Cromwells etc
