Hi, if you're talking about the MGMN 200 parting/grooving inserts then I might've been able to help you, but if not then sorry, i'm empty pockets on this one.

No, the blade type

I have seen steel blades with brazed carbide inserts in some of industrial catalogs but only in sizes too large for the hobbyist lathes. You might consider grinding a notch in one of your cutoff blades and brazing in a piece of carbide.

I have seen some blades for self-grip inserts that have small shanks to retrofit the Aloris AXA and BXA parting tool holders. If Shars Tool serves the UK you could look there.

There are some uncoated GTN-2 inserts about meant for Ali, think Iscar do one.

I got some uncoated Korloy GTN inserts from Cutwel. These are H01 grade. It's not a very well documented grade but is described as "uncoated carbide for non-ferrous metal".

I tend to use neutral

All the major proper brand names do specific carbide inserts meant for aluminium, its what I buy 90% of the time.

Stick with neutral it will still leave a burr and can turn up to a shoulder with it and face off to length where critical measurements needed.
The Left and Right hand have always leave a burr on finished part, more so with tubular products. RH parting off generally leaves a better finish if it doesn't flex as it cuts and bows in or out.

If you'r real stingy like me, you can find an old circular saw blade and cut a section out of that, ready made parting tool with carbide tip already brazed on. You may need to touch it on a green grit wheel to square off the tip. I'v got a number of blades from builder's skips.

I've not had much success finding them myself beyond the inserts I mentioned. Can you point us at some products?

If the OP can't find aluminium specific tips to suite may I point out the I use the general purpose coated tips in my Q-cut parting tool and these are fine with aluminium alloys provided I drip in my standard 50/50 straight cutting oil/paraffin mix. This prevents a build up on the edge, which does sometimes happen with certain alloys if I cut dry.

HTH,

Rod

Presume its the GTN ish style. does my head in manufacturers calling an industry standard insert by other labelling.

Iscar do them GFN-A looking at catalogue, got plenty of GFR plus other brand names but rarely use.
