Thread: DRO----How accurate |

Same Lux head as mine but my quill casting wore 14 years ago oval. Last time measured was around 0.6mm. I drilled and tapped M5 round the lower casting to put pressure on quill in desired direction. The lock pushes quill rearwards. Seen and proved loads of errors on others caused by using the depth stop to move any scale, theres always play but its very easy to do that way. |

I entered the mobile number 077750 99726 into a valid mobile search (there are a number of sites that come up as not tested by Norton) and it is located in Indonesia.
It comes up as Vodaphone UK north of Blackburn, though 99% sure its a spoofed number rom India. There really is an easy way out except email scams. If you register your number with the TPS, some years ago laws changed so that any UK company that then calls without your express wishes is doing so illegally. What that means is if someone is attempting to portray a UK number or is actually a UK person or company that calls you, you know straigh away they have something to hide. Simple. |
Thread: Boring aluminium - What am I getting wrong |
23/04/2021 21:18:01 |
Peter, if you must the ones Jason is demonstrating are ok once they are sharpened up. Used to use them daily until 8 years ago and do thousands of holes in 14mm thick. Hard to tell from the piccies, you cant allow aluminium to get hot and its also dependant upon grade. |
Thread: Best way to cut/turn a 75mm Disc from a piece of Aluminium Plate |

Posted by Greensands on 23/04/2021 15:20:01:
The object of the exercise is to produce an anular ring measuring approximately 100mm O/D by 75mm I/D and so the centre piece will effectively be an off-cut but being mean, I would rather like to retain as much of the work piece as possible rather than simply turn it all away in the process. A decent hole saw will knock you from £13 shopping around, the centre cut out approx £1.60, you work it out. The cheapy in sets wont last 1/2" depth and theyre about £8. Centre up and drill and tap a hole in that square plate, something like M12. Literally just hold an M12 bolt in chuck, it threads on tight and turn o/d. Used to do them that way 27 years ago before i bought 100's of round blanks.

We used to save dozens of 12" bastards up and someone would come round and do the elctrolytic job and bring back what was deemed salvagable about 35%. |
Thread: Internal Threading Inserts Puzzle?? |

In hydraulics, have used 0.5mm pitch for internal and extternal threading Titanium cylinders 2.05mm wall thickness. By going even 0.75mm pitch that reduces strength over the thread and extra 0.25mm. Just look upon it as a pitch, you can easily create your own, used to do a lot of M29.25 X 0.75mm pitch, o/d 33.04mm will hold 450BAR shear if o ring at the front so thread not exposed. |
Thread: Chalking files |
17/05/2020 19:12:30 |
Its the individual job case whether to use or not. Most of the times the job will respond better to no chalking just merely using the file differently or choosing another file or even a rasp. Keep oils off files, biggest mistake you can make wont cut or not very well until burnt off.

Thread: M-DRO Magnetic Tape / Linear Encoder |

Thats the newer type Martin they are a lot taller and a lot thicker than the originals from 2009 when first came out. Had to replace a read head last year that packed up, so went 1 micron this time, since then no more repeat errors. Read head straight swap for old, covering not needed its sealed with o ring strip. Older early type that first came out in 2009, only 7mm thick and shallower in height. |

Got the genuine Noga its never used, total waste of time and space for deburing holes. Continue using what i have always used the last 26 years - a knife! |

I always put potentially dodgy numbers into Google (leave out any spaces). Here's a result for Michael's caller: Used to do it until 2 years ago but pointless now since theyre all spoofed numbers. One aboves from India already have that blocked in BT from Jan. These fraudsters buy 10, 20 or 30 etc numbers per month and will show up as legit UK numbers even mobile numbers, BT, TPS, ActionFraud cannot do a thing about it. This is only Feb just gone, now due to coronavirus i have only had 3 Amazon Fraud calls this week, iNdia is on lockdown. |
Thread: DRO magnetic encoders - generic? |
23/10/2019 16:10:05 |
Bit late Adam i had two of the early magnetic 5 micron 10 years ago when just released. One packed up last week and went for a replacement 1 micron this time now reads 4 to 1. From memory the C scales are or were Sino and had to be rewired for their readouts. To be honest if size is no concern i would go with the Indian though very much larger like any glass scale, pointless. Tried twice calling technical at MDro fobbed off twice a best thats 5 days downtime. |

I know its impossible using a drill chuck to mill - taken about 15 years ago done about 600 patterned out to leave 0.8mm wall x 6.5mm thick with milling cutter in keyed chinese drill chuck. Drill holes to go on pcd. How do you honestly think these can be done by hand as one offs and beat cnc in china on price. Again drill chuck done well in excess of 1900 in 26 years, no cutters drop or chuck dropping out, materials 18mm thick. Must not do it again blah blah blah

" Whats the problem with that? Is it because its not a drill or a D bit or any other kind. " Try milling with it. Once you've seen one rattle and exit the chuck, you won't do it again.
Absolute garbage been doing and not diy for 28 years, not once has anything worked loose except using ER collets |

In a similar vein, left an American ME site after arguing with a colonial about NOT using a milling cutter in a drill chuck. "I've been doing it for years" was the retort. Whats the problem with that? Is it because its not a drill or a D bit or any other kind. |

I do all my threading with an inverted tool away from the chuck, no need for thread relief either, I just go straight in How are you plunging in to the metal with no relief? Most blind hole have no relief |

Only ever had the one foreign/asian, a repair followed by two new US circuit boards still couldnt do a thing with it except power a small 1" flap wheel. Duly got rid of with grease still on it. 15 years on still got the British iron, difference is it lasts.

Thread: Double ended milling cutters |

There were some decent double ended around 20 years ago, nowadays wouldnt bother. The flutes on all but the short ones will be too long for ER things, no problem with finger collets.
