There are several long threads about regestering miniatures for the road over on Traction Talk Forum which would be the best place to look. Search the "Model Engines" section, you will need to register as a new member if not one already

Edit this is probably the best thread that takes into account recent changes in road tax, registration, etc.

Scrumpy, I used the link below to help me register my 6" Garrett a few months ago, I filled in the forms as suggested, and in due course was allocated a Vin number which I got stamped on the engine, sent the form relating to that back, and in due course got the registration number and the permission to get a numberplate.

So in 3 years time will it need an MOT? I can just imagine turning up at my local garagiste's premises with a model traction engine!

Duncan your not far wrong the present system is not without problems and many miniature traction engine owner's have been turned away from the post office because they didn't have a M.O.T also the DVLA have told owner's they need to visit a M.O.T depot to obtain this or that document frown fortunately the registration process seems to be getting easier as DVLA staff become aware of what's required to register a miniature traction engine.

Ludicrous.

Do you not have those motorized skateboards and electric kids' scooters whizzing around everywhere over there? Nobody here seems to bother with registration for them, or the bicycles with electric motors fitted.

Just seems like bureaucracy out of control that a model vehicle needs registration. What about remote controlled model cars? Children's electric ride-in toy cars?

If it's a model vehicle, can you pay the registration in toy money?

I like Hopper's sentiment. But surely insurance is compulsory?

All comes down to what DVLA class the item as and also whether being used on highway or footpath.

Can a traction engine / ploughing engine not be registered as an agricultural vehicle aka a tractor ? No MOT and nominal tax.

Depending on he model there may be validity in classing it as an agricultural vehicle - MOT doesn't apply athough there would be restrictions on use on public highways further than the allowed distance from the registered address?

I may be talking a load of c**p but I recall reading somewhere that in order to be classed as an agricultural vehicle for road tax purposes, it had to be possible to demonstrate that the vehicle in question was capable of agricultural work. I suppose if you managed to hitch a plough to it.... indecision

I think that with full size TEs in NZ they get registered as agricultural machinery/tractors, the big exspence is the boiler cert each year.

A quad bike or car can be classd as agricultural.just has to be capable of taking the farmer across the land - and as i see it that can be via trackways - even my quadbike can't cross a swamp. Hang a bucket of sheep nuts from somewhere...wink

From the links I posted earlier the form to use is the V112 which has sections specifically for miniatures, to quote from the link

"fill out the V112 as required (when asked to declare the category your machine falls into, if you do a lot of road runs, I would recommend - Category A for miniature steam tractors, traction engines, road locomotives and rollers. If you seldom venture out on the road you could put your engine in Category F if no more than 6 miles per week are being travelled. If your machine is a short wheel based Sentinel or Foden you could use one of the above two categories as well dependant on mileage, and for Sentinel or Foden wagons you could use Category D or again Category F if road use is seldom. If you own a STW electric powered Foden you would use Category J)."

Form V112 is used for MOT exempt vehicles.

They are also tax exempt

For those really curious the form can be downloaded from DVLA so you can see exactly what it says.

As Jason says you need to fill out the V112, stating the vehicle is MOT exempt, but when I went through the process as described above in May this year I had no problems at all, and when the process was complete, a big envelope arrived with all my supporting documentation in it. I would suggest that if the guidelines are followed properly, then all proceeds along, albeit slowly, so plan ahead.

Bingo- next project idea for someone, a set of plows and discs, etc. It's all a vicious circle.
