Workshop Disposal

It's a sad fact that sooner or later we will all have to leave our workshops behind or sell them on. Roger Backhouse's 2014 MEW article on disposing of a workshop offered some useful advice that may make the process easier for us or our families and friends.

I get enquiries about this subject and it can be hard to answer them well in a brief email, so I have put Roger's article on the website HERE .

I hope anyone looking for advice on this subject or wanting to help someone else facing this situation finds it useful.

Thanks for this article on a most difficult topic. None of my immediate family share my interest in Model Engineering, thus my wife or the executor of my estate, would be tasked with disposing of my workshop. I, and I'm sure many other members would see the value in being able to print this article to be placed with a will and/or other instructions for their estate. Could you make this article available as a downloadable and printable document or .pdf?

In my case, as I'm in the states, the references to firms and even this forum would need to be oriented to my location.

Mine is all sorted. When I go the wife will take it all up the dump.

David - leave a note on the workshop door helpfully pointing out the local dump address as the same as the local Model Engineering club house which also provides a free collection service.

She knows where the dump is and is looking forward to it.

Whilst my wife and I were writing our wills out I politely informed her that if I went before her and she ordered a skip I would haunt her for the rest of her days , as I've said before I collect and restore stationary engines and my wife has no idea of their value and if I told her we would discuss the selling of them, load of scrap iron is a common remark

Mr David Clark, ur answer to this subject make my belly ache with laughter.......

a good friend is what I plan to use to help out her indoors..... the other thing I do is to have a code on all the machines......the price I paid for it and it's current value, easy to update once per year.......so the boss know's whats she's left with at a glance......

My wife is a good-un and helps out in the w/shop all the time........she's no Arfur Daily but a good with money,

she's got all mine hahaha.......

What I'm really hoping for is to find a good enthusiastic young-un to train up and he/she can have it all for "Gratis"

that's provided they take all the junk as well....hahaha.....

I hope I have a good few years left before I get into place (coffin) where these services are needed....

unreasonable behaviour = grounds for divorce... choose which spouse you think might have grounds on reading the above!!

a properly well thought out and professionally drafted Will is the only correct solution.

I collect stationary engines and my wife also has bought some,no fear of mine going to the tip,she knows exactly what they are worth,and I have chosen executors who can identify what my engineering equipment is,and its value. And if you collect something else leave a note to your executors stating its approximate value. The worst problem for anyone sorting out someones effects when they have died is knowing for instance ,where the stationary engine or motorcycle magneto is,it may be stored indoors to keep it dry away from the machine,and are then lost chucked out with household rubbish

I just hope when I go, my wife doesn't sell my gear for what I told her I paid for it...
