Thread: State Pensions - Notification thereof.
25/03/2023 14:30:55
Posted by vic newey on 25/03/2023 12:18:43:

Mine and her indoors both came the same day, because we were born before 1951 we get a lower state pension than those born after angry 2

Yes, mine is the same, not sure what HMGs reasoning is for this.

The government's shameful decision to tax state pensions is the thing that really gets me.

Probably not the best place for this discussion though.

Thread: Knurling Question
20/03/2023 18:52:17

Ian, since the knurling on the originals is fairly uneven anyway, it looks perfectly OK to me. Nice job! Do you black the blades too?

I bought one of these knives from Brick Lane street market in London about 60 years ago. Ex military tools and hardware was sold at most markets and many specialist shops in those days, seldom see the stuff now! The handle on mine was ribbed, I've seen many more over the years but never one with a knurled handle. Interesting thread, knurling is tricky enough on straight sections, I'm intrigued to see how it turns out.

Thread: Workshop Mistakes (True Confessions)
16/03/2023 17:49:40

I very carefully screwcut a replacement part for for my dividing attachment. A superb job, I was pleased with it. Until I found it was out by 1 TPI. This was how I discovered that the selector on my gearbox doesn't quite line up with the label. Well yes, of course I blamed the tool, miles out innit!

09/03/2023 11:55:09

I've made just about every mistake, usually for the reasons mentioned by Dave.

David's post reminded of a mistake I made when I was very young. I was outside the house and turned around to see a brilliant blue object floating in the air about six feet away from my head. I backed away very slowly and made myself elsewhere!

The mistake was telling my parents and schoolteacher about it, I quickly understood than strange weird and unusual things were not subjects for discussion unless you wanted to get locked up.

I can also vouch for the existence of ball lightning.

Thread: Help wanted, How can I use a stepper motor as a table feed.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to this.

Many thanks everyone, just what I needed.

It is for a Sieg small milling machine.

It already has a stepper motor fitted to the X axis.

Not sure what it is, has 8 wires and label says (amongst other things) 3.1A.

I have seen adverts for stepper motor controllers (some have pots and switches) not sure if these are the same as drivers or do I need both?

I'm sure this is old hat to many but whilst I'm reasonably proficient in electrical and electronic systems, I've never had much interest in CNC.

Any advice most appreciated

Thread: Ultimate Universal Machine ?
27/07/2020 22:35:21

Very nice too!

I do like multi function machine tools.

I have one of the Meyer & Burger S models with some accessories, be nice to have all of them but I would need a lottery win (and a bigger workshop). It seems to be a very capable machine for its size.

I bought a used Impetus (Metalmaster) machine a few years ago, very compact and also with adjustable height headstock. The idea of this was a one machine workshop, with the optional drill attachment, it would do that well. It deserved to sell a lot better than it did.

I doubt that there will be much further development of machines of this type. A CNC spindle and workholder can do everything they do and more.

Still some fascinating stuff out there though!

Thread: Alba 1A advice
05/07/2020 22:24:32

There are old new Alba shapers and newer new Alba shapers. The later versions all have the motor in the base. Older versions (some were fitted to a precarious looking pillar) may have the motor fitted to the rear of the machine or may have no motor at all but were driven by a lineshaft or wall mounted countershaft. There are detail differences between some of the older ones. Power crossfeed was fitted to all machines, vertical feed was an option.

Thread drift alert

What probability did you put on getting shot with a six shot revolver an one round? If it was 6 to 1 against you were wrong. With a conventional revolver, 1 round loaded and held upright the odds of the round being under the hammer when the trigger is pulled are much less than 6 to 1 This is because the single round unbalances the chamber and it will naturally tend to stop at the bottom.

Robert G8RPI.

If the cylinder spun freely you would be correct but the HAND (the pawl or lever which rotates the cylinder) drags on the ratchet so I would not depend on the loaded chamber being at the bottom

Thread: VFD Question

Most of the low cost inverters output 220/240v 3 phase. A 415v 3 phase motor needs to have the windings connected in Delta to operate with these. If the windings are Star connected, they are effectively in series. There are 220v in/415v out inverters available but they are expensive, it is cheaper to reconfigure the motor windings.

Thread: Making a ring mandrel- jewellery tooling
03/01/2020 21:51:55
Posted by Bill Phinn on 03/01/2020 01:16:36:

daveb, relatively few high street jewellers these days fabricate rings (as opposed to having them cast or buying off-the-peg castings) and even fewer fabricate them on site. This means that even routine jobs like resizing increasingly have to be sent out. "Sent out" can mean somewhere like www.makermends.com or as far as Hong Kong

Thanks Bill, that is why I did the job myself. It is getting very difficult to find tradesmen who actually know their trade. I now have so many skills that I can make anything except money. I intend to start an engraving project next! nerd

02/01/2020 21:09:05

I asked at a jewellers about making my gold wedding band a bit bigger (my finger is fatter than it was 40 odd years ago). I got a very negative response, the guy said he would have to send it off for an estimate. I decided he could do without my business and did the job myself with a no.3 morse taper and parallel no.3 morse taper socket (as used in turret lathes). Gently tapping the taper into the ring whilst supporting it against the socket, turning it over and checking the size often. This did the job without marking the ring and I finished up by holding the ring on the taper in the lathe and polishing it.

Thread: Kity Woodwork Machine Switch

Fit a DOL starter switch at the edge of the bench. Connect the existing plug lead from the motor switch to the OUT terminals and the original plug lead (or a longer one) to the IN terminals.

Reshape the hex head of a M20 machine screw and cut a screwdriver slot in the threaded end so you can hold it to tighten the nut.

Thread: Alexander master toolmaker

Don't know what the gibs are like on the Alexander but it happens occasionally with Bridgeports, it's caused by the knee gib breaking and locking the knee.
