Can't see why they would not work with silicon rings in the two glands if you sized the cavities correctly. Could add a piston ring too if the bore were lapped but not really needed on a display engine, different if its going to have to work. My Minnie has silicon rings in everything and the recently completed Cameron has a vitron ring in the 1.75" cylinder and runs very smoothly. Sizes of groove/housing will be in Model Engineers Handbook or Reeves Catalogue. Edited By JasonB on 11/06/2015 18:41:11 |

Use graphite yarn of good quality, not lose filaments of graphite yarn who will disappear from glands. It is piston who is fitted with O-ring. Instead oil groove in piston, i has turned the groove for O-ring. Never had problem with friction due the Stuart D10 is lubricated with steam cylinder oil.

![]() 167 forum posts 53 photos | I am soon to start on finishing a D10 that some else started many years ago. Should be interesting. I am going to need to get some ba taps and dies though. There was packing around one of the pistons as a ring which I too thought of replacing with o-rings. |

1294 forum posts 108 photos 1 articles | I have done a 10V with an O ring, that has run quite a lot on display with no problems. Groove size was as per the Tubal Cain Model Engineers handbook. I also used O rings for the gland packings. They are made to look like a conventional packing with two studs but there is a concealed shoulder so the O ring has the right side clearance. I can get the engine to run by blowing very hard into the inlet. I've also done a Double 10 with actual piston rings. They have to be pretty small in section, but I followed the Chaddock proportions and they are fine...they spring onto the piston without breaking, there is little friction and they appear to be sealing fine. My Stuart Triple also has cast iron piston rings, but is not far enough along to test yet. John |

![]() 167 forum posts 53 photos | I have a D10 question so I hope David doesn't mind a Thread hijack. My D10 is quite old. The crankshaft looks like it might be manufactured from one piece and the crank pins are set (machined) at about 120 deg rather than 90 deg. Does anyone else have a D10 like that? Will there be any problems with an offset like that? Regards Bruce Edited By Bruce Edney on 13/06/2015 07:32:30 |
