I'm lucky enough to have got every one of the MEW magazines so I was going to pass on the 25 year special until I saw it lying on the counter as I was picking up my daily paper. When i was told it was being returned to distributors as not wanted I took pity on it and have quite enjoyed recalling Neil's choice of classic tools from the last 25 years and comments from some of the earlier editors.
Tonight, however my eyes went to the promotion of the special at the home page of this site and, in small print and subject to change, I see there should be a FREE pull out plan for a Dill Grinding Machine with the issue
I didn't get one so my question is : Was it dropped from publication or has the shop (or distributor) lost it somewhere along the road ?
Who should I be chasing after?

I got my copy direct from MyHobbyStore, and there was no plan for a "Dill Grinding Machine" as stated in their description.

So I assumed it was one of Neill's pathetic jokes, like the Metrinch.

Anyway, I don't have any "Dills" to grind. A few axes maybe, but no Dills.

I need to get MyHobbyStore to change their text, they still have the provisional text (including 'Contents and cover subject to change', although they have updated the cover.

It shouldn't be mentioned elsewhere (I can't see it on the home page), so if it is can you give me a link to the page.

The text on the MHS weebsite was written based on my early draft contents and by the time it went up the contents had already changed considerably. We had to lose the plan for technical reasons. Basically I had not realised how the tiny font they used in the old days was. We couldn't get away with such small print these days and they also overlapped drawings and crammed them in. This meant the reprinted articles came out much longer than expected so we needed the pages for content.

I will be putting the drill jig up as a free plan on this website in due course.

I noticed that in the war years issues. Rationing forced them to cram amazing amounts of type in, tiny margins and overlapping pictures

A 1945 volume is 9x6 inches (54in sq)

A 1938 volume is a lovely generous 11x8 (88in sq)

The war shrank the magazine to 60% of its original size, while packing in the same amount of content

Thanks Robbo,

That's the one I asked them to change.

> I also bought the 25 year mag and there are no numbers on any of the pictures ,.is this a free puzzle?

I think this was an unintentional result of trying to achieve consistency of presentation as older articles didn't have photo captions.

This is a copy of the review I posted on the MyHobby Store review site after receiving my copy of the 25 years magazine (ordered direct from them)

As you may conclude I am not overly happy with the way the product was advertised (Misrepresentation comes to mind) crook

[On the cover it shows “Details and Plans for ten classic designs” INSIDE THIS ISSUE
Don’t get misled all that is inside is lists of plans available “at a purchase price” from the store - details of these plans can be obtained by visiting there online shop.

I was expecting copies of plans/and details to be included within the publication ]

I am expecting my review will be posted out of the magazine site - also possibly this post

Hi Homeuse, I have a copy here. There are ten articles in it with full details including plans and instructions:

  1. Optical centre punch and centre finder
  2. Four jaw chuck
  3. Grinding rest
  4. Small instrument vice
  5. Three-way toolpost
  6. Precision level
  7. 4/6-facet twist drill sharpening jig
  8. Ball turning attachment
  9. Between centres boring bar with micro adjustment
  10. Quick and easy tangential tool

That's ten whichever way you count it. Any questions?

I should add there are eight other articles as well.

Hi Neil - Yes I agree but how many of those are by myhobbystore .

The advert indicates that the store has ten classic designs and plans INSIDE THIS ISSUE (pics. of the plans are overlapping the “ inside this issue” block) which seems to refer to the said plans.

The 10 articles you refer to are by contributors in past magazines of which I have copies and have in fact made some of the items.

Still angry at having bought what turn out to be mainly copies of my collection

Maybe you missed something but all along Neil has made it quite clear that this was going to be a "compliation" of articles etc from the last 25yrs of MEW so you can hardly expect it to have ten new items in it.

Here it is again for those that missed it.

And lets face it 99% of MHS plans are just all the drawings spread throughout an article condenced onto a sheet or two. So its the same plans whatever format they take.

I've not seen the mag but would assume "lists of plans available “at a purchase price” from the store " is just like the usual advert that appears in the mags for the MHS plans service.

I was not expecting 10 new articles from contributors but was expecting as stated on the front cover under the separation line of Harold Hall’s article

“ myhobbystore inside this issue Full Details and Plans for Ten Classic Designs (which included thumprints of two hobby store plans) “

How about this “copy and paste” from the advert

You can pre-order 25 Years of MEW HERE (note that the preview info was written before publication, the sample pages below give an accurate picture of the content).

Accurate Picture !!! NOT SUBJECT TO CHANGE - indecision

I thinks I have got it.

The actual printed mag that Homeuse has got which obviously is not subject to change as its the final print has on the cover a thumbnail of loco and IC engine plans. So I can understand where you may have got the idea that of those 10 free plans you were going to get more substantial plans than Neil has listed above. To have used thumbs of the actual plans included would have been a better option.

I too have every issue of MEW from No 1, so I could read all the articles by looking in my "magstore" if I wished.

However I thought it worth a look to see how they were presented nowadays, what had been selected as "the best of", and the comments from former editors.

The articles and plans were as I expected (plans included within the articles) so I was not disappointed.

And I was prompted to dig out my Dave Lammas 3-way toolpost and have a go with it after using the QCTP for so long.!

Don’t get me wrong I’m not dissatisfied with what is included but more disappointed that what I thought was included was not - I still say that the advert is very misleading
