Does anybody out there have experience of building a Black 5 from Don Youngs drawings ?

I am puzzled by a couple of things and people tell me there are mistakes in the drawings, does anybody know where ?? better still a list of corrections.

I have a complete set of unmachined castings for this engine and Don Youngs drawings - any idea of the value i need to sell them for a friend who has lost his workshop and has no internet access. thanks steve

I think he paid about £400 for them 8 years ago.

Hello Les,

You should get a reply soon, but try using the google search box half way down the HOME PAGE searching for "don young black five" (without the quotes).

Hello Steve,

Please could you use a free classified ad for your offer.

Neil

Thanks Neil ,

I have very little information on this engine and no idea on it's value. Hope it's okay to put in a general request for help and advice before I submit a classified ad,

Steve

Steve, feel free to seek information, but if people don't use the classifieds the forum proper will soon get clogged with ads.

it's a damned good loco! one of Don's best designs. i drove the first example to be completed built by John Edwards of the Cardiff club many moons ago and now owned by a great friend of mine. i am not aware of any problems with the original design.

cheers,

julian

Drawing No.9 for the Don Young's Black Five locomotive (LLAS No.53) shows a 3/16"x40 plug on the inner dome. He also shows exactly the same fitting for his Horwich design (LLAS No.14, Drw. 4). Can anyone explain the purpose of this plug? The only possibly explanation that I can think of is for lubrication purposes but his hardly seems to be a practical even recommended arrangement. The other possible use might be to provide a fixing for the external dome cover but then I would have expected the plug to be fitted with an internal thread which it does not appear to have.

Lubrication? I am pretty sure you don't want to ever put oil, or, any lubrication into a boiler.

I have attached a scan of the DY Black Five boiler drawing showing the detail of the dome and the 3/16"x40 plug in questiondome 001.jpg

I didn't fit that plug as I have no idea what it's for either.

Drawing shows its age, "lag with asbestos or.."

Plug, simple facility to run on compressed air during build?

You could be correct there. In the build notes after mentioning this bush he does talk about soldering a bike valve into a bit of hex bar but that's all.

The function of the plug is to be able to put a very small drop of oil on the regulator if it gets stiff. Of course, you must be extremely careful so you don´t get the oil into the boiler.

Jan B - Is that explanation given anywhere in Don's "Words & Music"? To avoid repeating himself Don had the habit of referring to previous descriptions but I do not recall seeing it in the building notes for the Black Five

I am not familiar with Don`s “Words and Music” but LBSC wrote about this in one of his articles. I have fitted this plug to al of my three locomotives.
