1394 forum posts 103 photos | When firing an ATM (Anti Tank Missile) be aware of the BBDA {Back Blast Danger Area) which is usually about 30 degrees each side of the back of the launcher and can extend to 25m behind. NLAW appears to have less back blast than some ATMs : "A ‘cold launch’ system then ejects the missile with pressurized gas before it ignites its rocket motor, accelerating the weapon to 440 miles per hour (200 meters per second). This allows the weapon to be used safely from interior spaces without injuring personnel with the rocket’s back blast. " From the videos showing them being deployed, I still wouldn't want to be behind one when the trigger was pulled (or in front of one for that matter ! ). Combination of NLAWs and Javelins deployed from drones seem to be hammering another nail in the coffin of the Main Battle Tank - a $20k 10kg "disposable" infantry rocket system that can destroy a $5 million MBT at up to 800 metres. When firing an ATM (Anti Tank Missile) be aware of the BBDA {Back Blast Danger Area) ... Nigel B. Not polite I feel to use Speedy's "Is this distasteful' thread is to launch more content that might be considered distateful! Better start a new thread for such stuff please. This famous cartoon sums up the distasteful side of effective weapons. Roughly translated, 'The dream of the inventor of the Needle Gun', it's a comment on the Austro-Prussian war of 1866, which triggered the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. In it the skeletal gun-maker Johann von Dreyse smiles at the heaps of dead and maimed he's brought about. Success! Most people see weapons from Johann's perspective. Unfortunate because most of us would be on the receiving end... Dave |

At least I don’t have to phone the wife and say they have cut my leg off. She was not pleased last time I did that. No problem now she has gone. I hope to live long and prosper. Not a lot more to go wrong now. I had a full MOT last September and they could. They gave me a pacemaker just in case because they said I would probably need one in the next 5 years anyway. Fortunately it worked, more luck than judgment on there part, and I have not had another blackout since. |

Nigel B. Deployed from drones? These are both infantry weapons, if you have any information of these being deployed from drones I'd be interested to see. |

![]() 271 forum posts 5 photos | It has always been the same since I was the first moderator when I was the Model Engineers’ Workshop editor. I don’t remember blocking many posts- though. I would probably not let through posts about gun making and ammunition though because most of it was illegal in the UK. Same as not having articles about it in either magazine, I think there was a series describing the construction of a “Pepperpot Pistol” In Model Engineer before my time though. |

I think you misunderstood the point I was making, not that a few handfuls of charcoal in a toy train will destroy the environment, but be careful not to try and ban everything you might not like because there will always be someone who takes offence to what you enjoy and try and ban it. There was a thread on here last summer and someone stated they're against a charcoal BBQ because of the environmental harm. |

Can't disagree with that Pete! I'm against banning things too - without good reason. My point is it's wrong to trivialise efforts to improve the environment by suggesting environmentalists will object to model engineering and somehow succeed in banning it! A few ignorant green band-standers might sniff at the hobby, but environmentalism isn't about stopping low damage fun, it's about tackling the most serious challenge of our age. Environmentalists don't run governments or big business. Green issues are getting attention from them now because there really is a problem, even if vested interests and wishful thinkers are denying it. Dave
