Norman,

... Do you mean that pressing 'return' actually just starts a new linequestion

On mine, the cursor jumps to the top of reply window.

i.e. In this message it goes to immediately before:

Earlier, someone asked about a model of an Enigma machine.

Last year, at the annual 1940s Week End (Held, over the first week end of October, in the Cambridgeshire (UK) village of Holme), there was a "German" enactor who had made a replica Enigma. To my untutored eyes, it looked pretty good, with letters lighting up as keys were pressed. It certainly looked very like the real machine seen at a lecture on cyphers and coding machines.

How can you have an annual 1940's weekend ? Surely next year it will be 1941 and the year after 1942 ?

Thanks Howard, it was probably me! A bit of web research since my original post revealed that good replicas sell for serious money because originals are very rare.

A replica British Type X machine might be even more valuable. Apart from a few examples retained by GCHQ these cypher machines were all comprehensively smashed to bits immediately on being taken out of service. Unless someone knows different that is?

Someone has 'reported' a post asking 'how do I contact a moderator'?

The answer moderators have 'moderator' under their profile picture. Click the message member icon at the bottom of a moderator's posting to send them a p[personal message.

If the question is about viewing classifieds, see above - you will ahve to make a number of forum postings to see the contact details.

Neil

Neil, any idea when the Moderator bit is going to be removed from the message that comes up? Keep getting PMs from people wanting me to contact buyers for them. Surely there must be more than one person at MTM who can do it?

Hi Michael

If I press carriage return the cursor does jump back to a position in front of the first character of the message. If I just continue typing however a CR & LF is automatically inserted appropriately - I needed to type all that to check just what it does!

Pressing <Enter> after the "does!" above gave new paragraph.

Not the easiest or most intuitive operation I guess but I spend so much time on the blessed pad that I guess I'm used to it now!

Regards

Norman

There isn't, I'm afraid as its 'hard coded;' into the website. Our web developer is long-term sick and the cover they have brought in is 'maintenance only' as they don't want someone making 'random' changes.

But 1941 and 1942 are still in the 1940's

I know - I was there!

A general query about moderators and how posts with the moderator's hat on are displayed on the forum.

I've been careful to post this here, rather than in any more contentious threads.

It seems entirely reasonable that mods should be able to post on threads, in exactly the same way as any other member, as we all have something to contribute from time to time.

However, one thing I've noticed, is that if a mod is posting as a mod, the formatting of said post is exactly the same as if they were wearing their own hat, which could potentially lead to confusion, conflict, or misinterpretation.

Several of the other forums I frequent display text whilst wearing a moderators hat differently to when they are posting personal opinion.

e,g, On my local forum, the Moderators post is on a blue background; if the same mod posted with their private hat on, the text would just come up on a white background the same as everyone else's. Other forums have mods text in a different colour, or with a different banner.

Would this bulletin board software allow such niceties?

N.B. This isn't aimed as a dig at anyone, just a general query.

The other point I've thought about, is would it be possible to provide a "Preview Post" radio button along side the "Add posting" one?

All the best

Bill

Not possible.

Occasionally I will sign of with something like Jason (with/without my modertators hat on) if I specifically want to make a point.

It would be nice to just be able to click a button to show if it is an official comment or just a forum members comment but in practical terms we (moderators) would need to keep loggin in and out and have two user names which would take up time and likely we would post forgetting to change from one to the other.

In short, no, the forum software is unlikely to change much for a while.

I, when posting on this forum do so 99% in a personal mode and not a moderator even though it says moderator at the side of my name.

There is no way to differentiate between the two with the forum software. I could have two identities as Neil did with Neil Wyatt and Stub Mandrel but I have already been accused of having sock puppet alias's of which I don't have.

If I post as moderator I usually say "With Moderators hat on" but this is very rare. My moderation duties I keep to going into a post to correct a big typo, usually in the heading which once made the poster can't alter or providing clickable links to web sites.

At this opportunity I take great care not to alter the post in any way, whether I agree with it or not. Usually it's of no interest to me , just a way of making the post more presentable.

I like John Stevensons posts.
He knows what he's on with and tells it the way it is.
I don't like people who like to think they know what they're on with.
There seems to be a lot of them on here.
I never get the hump about being told I'm wrong, if indeed I am wrong. I treat it as a lesson learned.
I would most certainly NOT wish to be a moderator on this site, no matter what power or duties I held. A lot of the unknowlegeable replies to various threads leave me exasperated to the point whereby I simply don't wish to post even on subjects of which I know chapter and verse. Moderators have a tough job. It must be very frustrating for them if even I get frustrated by the whole malarky.
I take my hat off to you Mods.
