Hi There

They use strict html and are very careful when they make changes.

What they can't control is the way people post.

Going by the length of time that the overlapping adverts saga has been going on they must (IMHO) have prioritised being careful over actually making changes!

Also they dont have to control the way people post, just be aware that if anything can go wrong, it will.

Surely if nothing else they could restrict the width/size/length or whatever,of the fields that we can enter text and images into (with informative error messages or at least a helpfile). Even if its not a perfect solution it would ameliorate the problem.

TBH I have never seen another forum with as much clat or as many advertisements surrounding the page as this one...

And you never hear of this kind of problem on the Home Shop Machinist or Mad Modder forums.....

If everything here is all hunky dory then why so many complaints about it?

My 2 pennorth

There is something rather Spooky going on here.

I have just looked back at the forum link that I posted earlier ... it now displays correctly.
MichaelG. I see what has changed ... David has removed the long hyperlink that was causing the problem. I don't have relief on my saw and the blades seem to last forever!
There is a stop that you can set (carefully) so that the drop at the end of a cut is minimal. I also built a retractable pin to hold the saw in the position. There were some articles by Duplex many years ago - I think these went with the Duplex machine. There was also an article in MEW about some sort of damping device for a hacksaw. If you download the ME and MEW indexes Indexes you should be able to search for the articles that you want. They are Excel spreadsheets.

Fifer,

You can read David's first post because the lines of text are short !!

The "message box" still goes under the adverts.

O.K. folks ... I think I may have located the problem.

In editing my post of 23:03:00, I copied and pasted from the other thread.

If you look at the Source Code for THIS page, you will find that there is now one occurrence of

..... width: 590px;

That's what is now setting the width of the "table" that holds the messages.

"They" have changed the coding for the pages, but I have effectively overwritten the new design by pasting in a copy taken from the earlier page design.

Hope that makes sense ... it's bedtime.

David (Clark),

In the main, I don't experience the problem with posts running under adverts and have seen over the past year, or so, the efforts you put into correcting the causes of this phenomena. What I personally find more annoying than the problem is the people who apparently make no attempt to discover what might be causing the problem, nor how to correct it (by searching previous posts - of which there are loads!), before posting their whingeing comments on the forum attacking both you and the website.

It might be a good idea for you to post a link, or notice, on the Homepage advising people what to do to correct the problem if they do experience it, thereby avoiding those of us who seldom see the issue (and who clearly visit the site often enough to have seen both problem and recommeded solutions) from being subjected to the infantile comments of those throwing their teddies out of their prams.

Might save you some grief in the long run.

Regards Tom

My reply to Tomfilery

Your post confuses me, firstly you say that in the main you dont experience the problem although you obviously have seen it as you say its annoying, OK not as annoying to you as the people on this forum that in your opinion have done nothing to find the cause!

Quite a few people on this forum have proactively made efforts to solve the problem, even those who make a posting just reporting the problem are in reality trying to find the cause so your opinion about whingeing comments is quite rude really. You then later mention infantile comments and teddies/prams which I find insulting. Just look at the post immediately prior to yours (from M Gilligan) to see an example of what lengths some people go to to try and help.

Lastly you state that by searching previous posts the problem can be corrected, I wish!

I have probably read most if not all of the posts on this topic, if I followed the advice given in those posts I would by now have changed browsers three times, tried alternative operating systems and bought several computers and undoubtably would still see the adverts overwriting the texts!

By the editors own admission the problem exists, I for one do not believe its caused by the forum users and I doubt I am alone in that opinion.

If you do know how to stop the adverts overlapping the texts, please, please share it with us all.

Gentlemen,

I have just read through this thread for the first time, I've also set up " compatability view settings" but I am still getting adverts covering quite a bit of the threads including this one.

I hate the British at the moment, all they want to do is whinge and moan.

That's my whinging and moaning done for tonight.

But to those that are having problems, if someone here is using the same broswer as you and not having problems what do you think that suggests? Rhetorical question.

I am running Firefox with no problems currently. The only problem I had in the past was the login box too large for it's own box.

Hi There

Has this cured the advert problem?

Michael, how are you posting?

I think you are pasting in from something rather than typing it in.

The source code for your post was full of unecessary characters.

David,

First; apologies for messing-up the shape of this page ... it wasn't intentional.

What I did [on that occasion only!] was to: Select and Copy the text from the other thread, then Paste it into this thread.

It evidently came across as html; and any spurious characters will have been carried over from the earlier post.

... As I mentioned last night that includes the width: 590px; that caused the problem.

Hi Michael

590PX is the correct width for the middle of the page. I don't think that caused the problem.
It was all pasted into a table.

That appears to be what caused the problem.

Tomfilery,

If the behaviour of these pages was consistent across all browsers, then the solution would be as simple as you suggest.

Unfortunately; as you will see from reading previous threads, it is not.

Somewhere [I know not where] there is a "browser compatibility" problem within the Source Code.
