Padsaw handle with a hacksaw blade. Keep the blade flush with the surface with your fingers and go for it. I removed the remains of 6 x 1 inch dia studs & 6 x 1/2 inch studs this way yesterday.

You are correct, there was an article in MEW a few yearsago. I made 4 sets to suit differing sizes of square bar and found them very handy on numerous occassions. I`ll see if I can find the source reference as I should have it somewhere.

Neil, I`m struggling to make the detent assembly from the detail parts shown on the drawing. Can you also tell me what the purpose of the "finger" and the "flag" please.

It must be 60 odd years ago but I can remember regularly buying a Winchester bottle full of Ether to mix up with engine oil to make fuel for our model engines from our local chemist. Used to buy Amyl nitrate or was it nitite to add a few drops to the mix.. Can you imagine that happening now !!!

Still got my ED 246`s, Amco 3.5, ED Bee, Mills 75, Frog 500 & a couple of Mercos`. Son won`t let me sell them. Scares the hell out of the neighbours when I give em a run.

And after die cut came laser cut. Funnily enough Neil I can`t remember KK doing Die cut kits but They originally did " dye" printed whidh you had to cut out with either an Xacto knife or bits of broken razor blades. I can still remember my Dad complaining that his razor blades weren`t as good as they used to be. I wonder why???

Some of the Frog kits were die cut.

No fear of that... I'm still trying to think of a use for a 10mm (carbon) die that snapped in two the other day but that one has got me beat so far (except maybe as packing).

Or as a chaser , though you`d have to make some kind of holder.

From your description I take it that the gauge plate is 5mm wide X 30mm long X "?" thick OR is it 5mm thick X 30mm wide X "?" long ???

You may wonder why I ask. Well if you cut it to size you may have difficulty in holding it while you drill the holes!! So you might be better drilling the holes first before you cut it to size. Yes a hacksaw will cut gauge plate (unless someone has hardened it first). I`d mark out the hole positions first give them a good centre punch then drill & deburr and finally cut your piece to length.

Or use a bit of string !!!

Is it perspex or acrylic ??

Reason for asking is that my son regularly cuts &/or engraves acrylic up to 25mm thick using a laser cutter with no problems. So I dont think you need worry about coolant. Just take it slow & dont force it & use a fine tooth blade.

Very strange Brian but at the time I was told it was the other way round. The original aircraft were handbuilt but the new wings were as you say built to drawing (which were probably "metric" whilst the originals were imperial !! ).

Still have fond memories of my day away in a Nimrod especially the looks on the faces ot the 2 guys in the conning tower of that Russkie sub which we dropped in on. Absolute magic !

No, but I did make a Brauner pulse jet (plan in the Aeromodeller Mag in the late 50`s) when I was an apprentice. We fired it up outside the training centre one lunchtime ye gods was it noisy. Quickly shut it down as it was noisier than the Seahawk (RR Nene) we had been running up earlier. Even the MoD plods came looking for the source of the noise!

Still got the plans but not the engine some b*****d nicked it.

Don`t you mean Myford WERE in Beeston? When I lived in Melton Mowbray in the early 80`s Long Eaton, Chilwell & Beeston were all part of Nottingham.

Beat you to it Gordon, way back in 1956 or 57 I scaled up the 1/72nd scale MB 5 drawing in Vol 7 of Aircraft of the Fighting Powers to about 36" span & built a controline Amco 3.5cc powered model. It was nice but not quite the real thing which I always thought was a real cracker. Might still have that drawing somewhere. Never did find out where/when the original was scrapped.

Unfortunately after WW2 nobody was interested in preserving aircraft & by the time that they were there were not many left to preserve.

I also have a Bandsaw, a Burgess BK 1 which I`ve had for the over 50 years. I only ever used it to cut sheet metal because quite honestly on anything thicker than 1/4" I was quicker with a Hacksaw. When the Chinese bandsaws started to arrive in UK I considered buying one then but there were so many articles in ME etc about how to cure them etc that put me off so I went for the powered hacksaw instead. I mounted mine on a wheeled trolley & it sits under the bench until it`s required for use.

Make your own !! It will give you both great satisfaction in having done so & it also cheers you up when you remember you don`t have to use muscle power ever again.
