For those of you how mistakenly think a Diamond/Tangential toolholder is a new or novel idea, take a look at the picture , hopefully, below. It is an image from a book dated 1886, just goes to show "there is nothing new under the Sun".

Clearly my hopes where dashed! How do you post images? It was one the same page as the text but did not come out on the post.

21 forum posts | The tangential toolholders give a good finish and is easy to use. The only issue I have noticed with mine (eccentric) is when thread cutting (the finished thread is excellent) you have to cant the tool holder around to the tailstock to get the tool square to the work and this limits how close you can get to the chuck or a large shoulder. Other than this the tool is excellent and the only carbide insert tool I regularly use is the parting tool (another must have).

Dave

Hi Dave,
I must agree with you about the benefits and short comings of thread cutting. I have been making some pushbike axles from EN16T, to replace bendy Alloy ones, and get really clean cuts and threads. Downside is the ridiculous angle of the toolholder (home made) so have plans to make a special for thread cutting, just have to get my poor brain around the angles needed, unless I make one with a swiveling end! Maybe not.
Hope I can finish in time for SMEE demonstrations at Sandown MEX, unfortunately I live in a time-machine and if I am not careful and blink, I jump forward a month or two. I can't seem to find the reverse controls.
chris If this comes up twice, blame Google Chrome. |

21 forum posts | Hi Chris,
I know exactly what you mean about the time machine, I'm stuck in one of those as well. A holder just for threading would be excellent. As for those compound angles, they do my head in as well.
Good luck with getting it all together for the SMEE demonstration.
Best regards,
Dave |

19 forum posts | Hi Ken, The time that I had to wait was somewhere about the same,as I was away on holiday I am not sure how many days it took but it should be with you any day now and it should be worth the wait . PS I got an email from Eccentric when they posted it |

Mine was ordered on the 5th August and I've had a message from my wife to say it has been delivered - total cost was £57.47 assuming there will be no further customs charges (are they charged for items imported from Australia to the UK?). I ordered the smallest T6 size for my Taig lathe. Does anyone have an online UK source for the recommended M42 grade, 8% cobalt HSS square 1/8" tool blanks? Colin |

Another convert to the cause!
I don't know anybody who, having looked closely and has the wit to understood the concept, is not taken with the idea.
I now have a special holder just for threading, it allows the thread to be cut much closer to the chuck, see previous threads for problem. I will post pictures as and when I think it can't be improved, or see it at MEX at Sandown on the SMEE stand in December.

19 forum posts | Hi Ken, As I said before you would not be disapointed with the cutter,I found out to, that the sharping was very easy and a pleasure to do, as I myself was not an expert at getting the sharping perfect most of the times, so in the meantime Happy Turning. |

![]() 304 forum posts 28 photos | colin, I purchased a diamond tool from bay .com in america a few years ago & the customs stiffed me up for about £20 plus I had to collect it from p.o. sorting office & they charged me £4 for the privilege. I love the tool & tend to sharpen it more than normal tools as it's so quick & easy making a better finish on the work,it's not so good on brass as it's got too much top rake. |

14 forum posts | Hi Graham I also have been stung recently with import duties and fees when I bought a motorcycle tank from the States. I think I may be OK with the diamond tool holder I purchased from Eccentric Engineering as it had a declared value of 20 aud on the import slip. I'm sure there are no duties payable if the value is less than something like £15. Colin |

I await with interest the promised article on Tangential holders, I wonder what style David proposes to show? There are also more than one style of tool sharpening jig, some easier than others!

![]() 36 forum posts 4 photos | hi all just to add my comments on the diamond tool holder. ordered one from gary in aus on the 24th and it arrived today . the concept seems great and first impressions after some straight forward turning and facing are that it is just that. . easy to sharpen and cuts really well . lots of playing still to do when time allows. might i also add that i enjoy this forum and model engineers workshop.
regards andy |
